Jeannine's Story
Life
I was born in Atlanta and have lived in Georgia most of my life. I attended school in the city of Atlanta and DeKalb County while I was young, and I graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School in 1960. I then spent four years at North Georgia College in Dahlonega from 1960-1964 before returning to DeKalb County to begin my teaching career. I married Ron Rickard in 1968. We lived in Nebraska and Florida when we were first married, but we returned to Georgia in 1974. We have two children. Ryan (34) is married to Marci and works for Newell Rubbermaid in Atlanta. Jana (30) is an athletic trainer for Resurgens Orthopedics in Kennesaw, Georgia. I taught school for 34 years and retired in 1999 to care for my father who had numerous health issues at that time. He passed away in 2005 at age 88. I started my family late, and my first grandchild was not born until I was 59. I now have two precious little granddaughters...Riley (age 5) and Bailey (age 2). Watching them grow is a tremendous source of joy for me. My husband and I now live in McDonough, Georgia, south of Atlanta. Scrapbooking and genealogy are my hobbies.
School

xpected me to make straight A grades....and I was always stressed trying to make those grades. I did have some good times at SWD and made some wonderful friends. We were lucky to grow up in the "best of times" when life was simpler and people had stronger moral and religious values.
College
I received a BS Degree in Elementary Education from North Georgia College in 1964, and the friends that I made at that small college are still close even after more than 40 years. The military atmosphere at NGC was unique, and I will always remember the sound of taps ringing out over the campus at night. I could not have asked for a better college experience. I also received a Master of Education Degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando in 1973.
Workplace
I taught school in Georgia, Nebraska, and Florida. My best teaching experience was in Nebraska. The children were middle class students and extremely well rounded and respectful. (That was in 1968-1970.) I enjoyed the first twenty-five years of teaching, but the last nine years were difficult. It is a shame that today's students resist the learning process and have little respect for themselves, their peers, or their elders. I am still glad that I chose teaching as a career. Hopefully, I was a positive influence on some of the students that I taught.
