Jef's Story
Jef's schools include Brown Deer High School.
More about Jef:"I am a ceramic sculptor. People and animals are the focus of my work. Currently my designs have shifted to life sized human forms. I have chosen mythical characters and created them using animals. These beings represent ecosystems. Each and every small creature involved is integral to the whole.
My art work offers an antidote to the over used minimalistic welded girders and rectangular blocks of granite so often used in public art of the last century. The work is complex and tantalizing to the eye and should have a 360 degree sight line. Spectators are drawn in and find themselves loosing track of time while exploring the work. These sculptures deserve and receive second and third considerations, offering new things to be discovered at each viewing.
Mythical beings are used as a beginning point. Atlas, Gaia, Water, and Forest Nymphs, Faun and Flora, and Adam and Eve are just a few ideas that can be used for subject matter. My beings are composed of native wildlife, connecting the audience to the natural environment. As we look ...Expand for more
to our future we should be concerned about climate change and other dangers to our way of life. My figures stand as sentinels and gentle reminders of how inter-connected and fragile our world truly is.
While the pieces I make are constructed with clay, the artwork used outdoors can be cast in bronze. The price of a bronze figure will be roughly double that of the clay work. My work and the landscape compliment each other. Outdoor pieces are monochromatic with a bit of patina to add a hint of color. Bronze sculpture is very durable, low maintenance and will require only a minimal cleaning with soap and water over the years.
Sculptures displayed indoors are protected from the elements; therefore the use of color can be more flamboyant.
The word “Green” as it is used today may be a fad that will leave us but the concept of a healthy environment must not. With the threat of the extinction of many plants and animals, our relationship with nature is ignored at our peril. My sculpture represents the symbiosis of life; all creatures mixing together to form a greater existence......".
