Jeff's Story
I had a really good time at Tennyson. My biggest problem was that I had too much fun! Once 1986 had started I realized that I hadn't put that much into the actual "school" part of school. My main attraction was socializing. I started to panic a bit and wasn't too sure of what the next big step was going to be in my life.
Lucky for me a good friend of mine from Tennyson (which I will remain nameless) ran into a problem. His girlfriend found out she was pregnant. Now you are probably wondering how this benefited me. Well we got to talking about what the cost would be to bring a baby into the world and I let him know that it didn't cost you anything if you were in the military. That was knowledge that I had from growing up a military brat.
Armed with that information we decide to head down to Southland to the recruiters office to discuss our options. When we arrived we found that all four branches of the military had offices there. Our initial intentions were...Expand for more
to look into joining the Army. We started with the Army recuiter and he told us that if we joined the Army we would have the opportunity to "Be All We Can Be". Things were sounding pretty good and we even talked about a possible career as MP's. Just when we were about to put pen to paper and sign our lives away to the Army, I decide that it would be a good idea to go ahead and talk to the rest of the branches of the services.. since they were all here anyway.
The two Air Force recuiters gave us the impression that they were too busy to talk to us. After a couple of minutes standing at there doorway we moved on to the Marines. The Marines were all about being Marines. When I tried to talk about possible jobs in the Marines they told us that it didn't matter what job you had, you would be a "Marine". Again I tried to find out what jobs were available and was told that the Marines would decide what job I would do. I wasn't too crazy about that idea, so we moved on.
