Jeff's Story

For about a year after graduation I stayed in Maine doing some odd jobs while attending USM part time. I got a call from Steve Jalbert who was working in Nashua NH as a kitchen supervisor and soon moved in with him and became a food and beverage purchasing agent. With a chain saw and some chisels I began learning and gravitating toward the unique profession of ice sculpting under the watchful eye of Chef Greg Picard and of course Steve Jalbert. I began realizing my destiny as my first joint adventure as sculptors with Dave Peterson surfaced. The project was to design, sculpt, and deliver a 15-foot, 15,000-pound globe and logo for a corporate event in South Portland at the Marriott. I continued to learn the art of ice sculpting carving pieces for buffets, weddings, and corporate events in New Hampshire. In 1992 I moved from the NH to Monterey CA still following Steve Jalbert around the country. Monterey was where I met my beautiful wife Tracy. After a couple of years in Monterey I left the food and beverage industry and Tracy and I moved to San Francisco and I started working with my brother at Foley Hi-Tech as the office manager. On January 1st, 1995 our first daughter Korissa was born. With in 6 months we decided to move from the high paced city life to raise our child in a more family friendly environment so we move to Napa CA. In a small rental house having life long friend Dave Peterson over for a visit we decided to start Clear Memories. We started it as a Catering Company and ice sculpting. After just a few catering jobs we decided to focus solely on the ice sculpting part of our business. Working several jobs trying to save enough money to purchase equipment this was a difficult time with one small child and the second on the way. On February 21st 1997 our second daughter Mikayla was born. 1998 we purchased a small house across the street from the house where T...Expand for more
racy grew up and also decided to make the ice sculpting a full time venture building a small freezer in my garage and trying to get the word out that Napa had an ice carving company. Over the next 3 years our reputation grew and we became the most well known and respected ice carving company in the Bay Area. We purchased the most state of the art computer technology and started changing the way people created Ice sculptures. In 2001 we had outgrown our existing space and started renovating a rental space. We added freezers, block making equipment office space updated electrical By February 2002 we were in our new space and settled into our new location. Business was booming and growing at an incredible rate, so where the kids. September 2, 2002 proved to be the most devastating day in the business history. Upon arriving to work that morning I found the building we had renovated and moved into had burned to the ground. Everything that we worked for over the 7 year period was gone. Insurance coved around 10% of the loss. This was a valuable lesson in reading and updated your insurance policies quarterly. I took out a home equity loan and we built a new facility at Dave's new property and were up and running again by December 2002. In 2005 we again made a move to a larger facility more centrally located to the freeways in the Bay Area. Business is good and continues to grow. My wife and children are the loves of my life. We enjoy camping, boating, kayaking, soccer, basketball, reading and karate (MMA). The kids get great grades in school (they get it from mom for sure). Life for me is very busy and very happy. I don¿t get back to Maine often but hope to some day own a summer house there. So that¿s the last 20 years in a nutshell. I hope whoever reads this is doing well and has everything they want in life. Happiness = Satisfaction Desire
