Jeff's Story
After attending schools in Herbertsville I spent my freshman year and half of my sophomore year at BTHS. My older brother John also went to BTHS and graduated in 1968.
In the winter of 1969 our family moved to central Florida for good. One branch of our family had settled in Polk County in 1920 and owned orange groves for decades. We made several trips to Lakeland in the Fifties and Sixties.
I've had a varied and interesting life with careers in banking, computer programming, sales and teaching. At every opportunity my family or I traveled throughout most of America, Eastern Canada and Europe. Recently I was writing about my life for my two sons and granddaughter and it dawned on me there were two major events in 4th and 5th grade at Herbertsville Elementary School that ignited my love of art and museums. In the winter of 1963 our teacher took us to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. We got a close up look at Leonardo's Mona Lisa thanks to Jackie Kennedy and the Louvre. The following year we went to the '64 NY World's Fair to see Michelangelo's most amazing sculpture, the Pieta. We also viewed a full-size replica of David. Wow, was I lucky.
One of the reasons I joined Classmates was to see if any of my friends were also on one or both of these class trips.
