married, that speed dream seemed even more distant. Sure, I still drove in weekend sports car rallyes, gymkahnas. etc., but I never actually hit the track except as a cameraman or pacing a parade lap with the Mazda or Corvette sports car clubs.
On my 50th birthday, my lovely wife Nola made my racing dreams come true for a time. She booked me into the Richard Petty racing driving school at Charlotte, NC, (Lowes's Motor Speedway) and I hit the historic high banks faster than I had ever driven before in a thundering NASCAR stocker. What a thrill for an old guy who still was young at heart. I liked it so much that I did the whole thing again in Florida. With luck I'll do it still again. I am a lucky guy in so many ways, but that was just icing on the cake, and I still smile about it. What a hoot!
