Jeff's Story

Life in General The most important piece of information about me is that I was fortunate enough to convince Susan Burdick to marry me in 1983. Everything since then has been gravy. PERSONAL ITEMS Back in high school I was soccer player (MFS, MHS & Moorestown United) and a pretty serious stutterer. After 13 years of speech therapy the stutter is all but disappeared. For the 50th MFS class reunion (which was held via zoom because of COVID), I made a video tribute to those in our class who had died. Those who are interested can see it on YouTube. In 2009 I was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer and went through a tough year I'd prefer to forget. All's well now. Life is pretty damn good and I've been a lucky guy my whole life. I would love to hear from any MFS or MHS graduates who remember me! CAREER I was a magazine editor for 10 years (last job as editor in chief of five inflifghts) before becoming a freelance travel writer in 1989. After 13 years of traveling the world, and specializing in Australia, I returned to full time work by becoming director of communication for AAA Colorado, where I supervisized the company's magazine, website, public relations, public affairs and traffic safety. BOOK AUTHOR 1. Back in the 1970s I spent 6 parttime years researching and writing a history book, Stapleton International Airport: The First Fifty Years (Pruett Publishing) that came out in 1983. It was the first book about a major US airport. 2. In the early 2000s, I devleoped the idea for a men's health boook and co-authored it with Dr. Gordon Ehlers, Facing Your Fifties: Every Man's Reference Guide to Mid-life Health (M. Evans & Co, 2002) . Publishers Weekly named it one of the Best Books of 2002. In 2012 I began full-time research and writing about World War One's Commission for Relief in Belgium (CRB), which became the largest food relief program the world had ever seen. During the four years of World War One (1914-1918), the CR...Expand for more
B, along with its Belgian counterpart the Comite National (CN), saved from starvation nearly 10 million civilians trapped behind German lines. It is one of America's finest hours and yet it is a story little known today. From my work, I've created and had published three books: 1. In 2014, Behind the Lines (Milbrown Press), which becamae a Kirkus Best Books of the Year. Kirkus declared the book is "An excellent hstory that should catapult Miller to the top tier of popular historians." (I'm still waiting for the catapult! 2. In 2018, WWI Crusaders (MIlbrown Press), which became a Kirkus Best Books of the Year. "A tour-de-force history. . . A magnum opus that celebrates the qualities of compassion, honor, and humanitarian virtue." 3. In 2020, Yanks behind the Lines (Rowman & Littlefield), which became a Publishers Weekly Booklife Editor's Pick, "This compelling chronicle will grip history buffs while opening their eyes to a little known but vitally important humanitarian mission." It also won the Colorado Book Awards in History. When Yanks behind the Lines came out, I created a book trailer. that can be seen on YouTube. Right now I'm working on my next book, Deadly News: Life and death with an underground newspaper in WWI German-occupied Belgium. PUBLISHER In 2020, my brother-in-law, Gene Zimmerman, asked me if I would help him self-publish a book of poetry he had written during the 4 and 1/2 years it had taken for my sister, Claire Miller Zimmerman, to die from a spinal tumor. In May 2021 I helped him publish, Searching for Clairity, which is on Amazon. Immediately after that my older brother, Eric Miller, asked me to publish his 480-page historical novel, Hula Girls. That came out in December 2021 on Amazon. He then asked me to publish a book of poetry about the last year he spent with his wife, Lisa Chong, before she died of liver cancer. That book, Little Known Stories: Prose in Format, came out in April 2022 on Amazon.
