Patricia's Story
I graduated from Western Branch in 1969 and went on to Lousiburg College and ASU in NC. In August of 1972 I arrived at North Miami Beach Senior High via Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. It was my senior year of college and I was doing what is now called an "ex-ternship" I was very, very young to be teaching and although I considered myself to be a free-spirit I was overwhelmed by the "hippie"...Expand for more
environment at NMB. All of the students seemed so much more sophisticated and worldly than I. For the first few months I tried like hell to get out of there and back to NC but Bal Goleman and Ellen Davis kept promising that it would get better. They were right. By January of 1973 when everyone in Boone was stuck in theeir mountain dormitory I was lying on the beach at 85th street soaking up the rays.
