Jeff's Story

There have been a myriad experiences since leaving Arco in 1976. We moved to Brigham City, Utah where I graduated from Box Elder High School in 1977. I became very interested in auto mechanics in high school and took a job at a local Chrysler dealership and then a local tune-up shop called Tune Tech. Shortly after that I began working at an automotive machine shop. In 1980, I moved to California to work with my dad in a ServiceMaster janitorial business. This turned out NOT to be my cup of tea, so I enrolled in the local junior college. After discovering that I was a better student at college than I had ever been in high school, I decided to pursue a college degree. Math and science became my new interests and I graduated from College of the Sequoias with a two-year A.A. degree in 1989. I also discovered that I enjoyed tutoring students as a part time job. I had married in 1985 to a wonderful girl from my church, Marla McGee. She suggested that I look into the teacher credentialing program. I found that I could finish a 4-year Liberal Studies degree with little or no travel to the next largest town to the north, Fresno. I graduated from CSU, Fresno in 1990 and began teaching science at Cecil Avenue Middle School in Delano, CA. I have since changed school districts and currently teach at Cherry Ave. Middle School in Tulare, CA. I live in a beautiful home with my wife Marla, my daughter Jessica, and my son Jason, three dogs and numerous daddy-long-leg spiders, a bane of the local fauna, in Tulare, CA. I enjoy gardening, working on computers, surfing the Internet, reading, but my passion is playing rock music with a local ...Expand for more
band, Ruffage. It's interesting to note that while I began my guitar playing days playing 6 or 12 string guitar, I now enjoy playing the bass and being the in-house roadie at gigs, setting up the PA system. At 49 years old, my voice is not what it used to be, but I still enjoy belting out a great rendition of "Play that Funky Music" or"Oh, Darling" by the Beatles. Playing music is a wonderful outlet for my musical creativity and I've found a great bunch of guys who understand the juggling act between job, family, and band. Check out steveharrell dot com for some pics from a recent gig. You will need to click the Music link and you can view pics of the band and I (playing bass). I recently finished a Master's degree in Education with and emphasis in Integrated Math and Science. Teaching and learning have also been passions of mine and I enjoy the "Aha!" moment of a student's understanding when they get a difficult science concept. I also enjoy more and more getting to know students on a personal level and connecting with them and their successes through life. It is pure joy to see them grow up and become members of the community, mothers and fathers. Teaching is sometimes a thankless job, but one that does have its rewards. Knowing I've made a difference in the lives of children is a satisfaction that I treasure. Thanks to all who have signed my guest book, but as I don't have a "Gold" membership, I can't see your signatures and comments. I would enjoy a message from anyone and a visit if you are so inclined as you pass through CA. If you would like to drop me a line, send me a message at jrparish831 at hot mail dot com.
