Jeffrey L.'s Story
Life
Wife-Penny Bain, '68 and happily-not-so-happily-very happily married since 10/4/68 --- We have 2 adult children: Michael (b.1969) (wife Jill-son Mitchell Steven b. 6/15/00 - daughter Sarah Kate b. 5/15/04) Mike (MSU '93) owns a local independent insurance agency, "The Reno Group" here in Wayland, MI. --- Michele "Shelly" b. 1973 (husband Aaron, teaches 5th grade, have one son, Auston Tyler, b. 5/21/99 , daughter Madalyn Kay b. 6/4/01; Shelly (GVSU1997) is an insurance agent & customer service rep at Mike's agency.
Penny was in school food service sales (1978-2002) then worked part-time as a field agent for AFLAC insurance 2003-2013) and more recently is director of senior citizens programming for the Wayland school district.
From 1985-2009 I taught English & Journalism at Wayland H.S. just outside Grand Rapids; advised the newspaper, yearbook & literary magazine and the Student Council. (All the things I loved most in high school.)
After retiring early, thanks to a modest buy out, I worked part-time for the Michigan Education Association for two school years doing contract negotiations and political action training work.
I successfully ran for one term on our local school board and served as president for one of the four years. A real treat for me was serving alongside my daughter who was a trustee and board secretary too.
Only missed one reunion (15th) since 1967 but am always interested in hearing from old friends who may have missed more than that! Poor grades and being just plain poor meant I was headed off to community college instead of a four-year school right out of high school. Ended up spending one semester at Flint JC where my roomies included old pal Ken Niblock and fel...Expand for more
low '67 grads John Lowe and Rick Park. I think we all lasted one semester and went our separate ways. Several years later, I decided I was finally ready to have-at-it again, this time commuting from Howell to Lansing Community from 1970-1973 before I transferred to MSU for one year in 1973-74. It wasn't until I returned to school in 1978-79/1979-80 did I finally graduate with a B.A. (journalism education) in the summer of 1980.
Between high school graduation in 1967 and college in 1980, I must have had a dozen different jobs, none of which ever proved as fulfilling as teaching. From Vescio's and Chevron Asphalt Co. in Howell, to apartment management and sports reporting in the Lansing area, just to name a few, I seem to have done it all at one time or another. All those life experiences have offered me a wealth knowledge that I was fortunate enough to share with my students on many levels.
Retirement
I enjoy reading, writing, sharing and discussing public education and public policy news and views on my "Mister Journalism" Word Press blog as well as as a local weekly online newspaper column. I volunteer with United Way and over the years have served on various boards and councils and committees in our community.
We snowbird for a month in Gulf Shores, Alabama (since 2013) after several decades of spring break vacations on Anna Maria island Florida beginning in the 1980s.
I thoroughly enjoy renewing, making new and maintaining old friendships on Facebook with high school classmates, friends and relatives. I also very much enjoy doing and sharing family tree research.
In fact I maintain, moderate and manage several Facebook pages and groups including alumni news, ancestry, education and such.
