Jeff's Story

Life Jeffry Stein Biography Some actors wear other hats; Jeffry Stein is a performer who seems to have a head big enough to empty a hat rack. “My card says, ‘Actor/Comedian/Writer/ Producer/Idiot’ because if I didn’t put ‘/Idiot’ at the end, people would add ‘/Egomaniac’ or ‘/Control Freak’ all by themselves.” Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sierra Foothills in a small town called Rescue, he began his career in radio, hosting a morning show in Sacramento at 102.5 KSFM and then at Hot 97.7 in San Francisco. And if he wasn’t on the air, he was on stage as a stand-up comic or theatre actor. But then he made the move to Los Angeles. “I decided to make the jump to Hollywood because there was very little TV or film in the Bay. So, I loaded up the truck and I moved to Beverly.” Burbank, as it turned out, but he immediately hit the stand-up circuit performing in clubs like, The Comedy Store, The Icehouse, and The Improv. But that was short-lived as he was hired to tour with country superstars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill for Country Music Television (CMT). Although he made two new friends and had a ton of time on camera, the tour eventually ended and he returned to Los Angeles where he started booking gigs like crazy. Between national commercials (Staples, E-Loan, LA Times, Cingular, etc.) and independent films (Reunion, To Be a Kid, Joe’s Hands, Moment of Silence, etc.), he was pretty busy Now, he’s made the move to writing, producing and directing; explaining this way, “Like every working actor here, some of the work was steak, but most was hamburger, and since I like meaty parts, I needed to create my own to keep happy.” Stein wrote, produced and starred alongside Erin Gray and Gary Kroeger in the pilot sitcom We’ll Be Right Back Like many projects, doors were opened, but the pen didn’t hit the ink and the show didn’t make it on the air. ate. Actors and a director were attached, but when the attached star’s latest movie bombed, the financing dropped out and the deal was over. Just the same, Jeff produced, directed and starred in segments of the scripts as gags, which were aired on Orlando’s WB affiliate and actually beat Saturday Night Live in it’s time slot. About this time, he learned about reality TV by working for Stone/Stanley Productions (The Man Show, Loveline) as a run-through host for their game shows in development. Seemingly destined to offer producing talents in everything he does, Jeff provided clearance and online distribution for The Comedy Team of Pete and James after being a co-star in principal shooting of this cameo-encrusted mockumentary. Furthermore, he co-produced and co-starred in a horror/comedy about cannibalism ironically titled The Cooks. Last year, Jeff joined forces with Soap actor Brad Yoder (General Hospital) to co-write, direct, produce and co-star in the sophomoric sitcom pilot Game On, which is making the rounds this season. Currently, he wrote, produced, and starred in the critically acclaimed play, The War Game, which he’s producing as an independent film this Summer. On top of all this, he still maintains his roots to radio by running a company called The Hazardous Comedy Network that provides topical audio and written comedy to over 70 radio stations nationwide, including Lamont and Tonelli (The Bone, San Francisco), Mancow (Q101, Chicago) and Scott and Todd (WPLJ, New York City). His favorite television appearances include The West Wing and Scrubs. Jeff proposed to his wife Kerie during his act on stage at The Improv in Hollywood and they’re enjoying their latest production: 3-year-old J.D. When not working, he enjoys tennis, political activism, watching his San Francisco 49ers lose as few games as possible, designing and playing World War II strategy games, and vacationing in the California Redwoods.
