Jeffrey's Story

After Lafayette, I spent four wonderful years on campus at Columbia University and received a B.S. in Chemical Eng'g from their School of Engineering. After graduation, I worked as a Chem. E. for three years -- first at a chemical plant, then an oil refinery -- while studying for an MBA in Management at Baruch College in the evenings. In 1971, I accepted an opportunity to switch from staid engineering to more creative management consulting. After 11+ years of consulting and operations management, I happened upon my ultimate calling - as a personal financial advisor - which allowed me to turn my hobbies (of tax and investment planning) into a profession. After obtaining my Certified Financial Planner designation in 1983, I founded my own financial planning firm where I spent 31 incredibly enjoyable and gratifying years helping clients understand, articulate, plan, and achieve (or exceed) their personal financial life goals. I retired at year-end 2013 after negotiating the sale of my firm to a younger associate, then became a client. As soon as I retired, I turned my then, and current, hobby - learning and teaching all things wine - into a gentle and pleasurable part-time avocation. This venture is beginning to wind-down now as my wife (of 45+ years) ...Expand for more
and I are traveling more. So far, we've experienced some 74 countries on six continents -- with Australia & New Zealand in our future plans. Seeing the sights and meeting the people of other countries has been our most educational and enlightening pursuit. Upon reflection, I sincerely appreciate those Lafayette teachers (especially of the A.P. classes) who prepared me for my college journey. I've also come to understand that several significant life events - including being introduced to my wife - were the direct result of actions by other Columbia alumni. In fact, were it not for the full tuition scholarship that Columbia provided to me, I never would have met, nor would my life have been enhanced by these alums. In recognition of this, and of the fact that we could not have any children of our own, we have endowed four undergraduate scholarships for current and future students who have a similar financial need. In addition, I have remained active in Columbia alumni activities and organizations - in response to a strong desire to give back at least some of my good fortune. I sincerely hope that all my friends from the Lafayette classes of 1964 and 1965 have experienced healthy and happy lives with ever more interesting and meaningful stories to tell.
