Jeffrey's Story

Okay, for those wondering "what ever happened to..." here is the quick version: Graduated as a junior (1973) and rode with my best friend John Keeler on our ten speeds to Eugene, OR and back that summer. My parents wouldn't let me go away to college as they were still in shock from the death of my sister, Chris. So I stayed REAL close to home. Rode my bike to American River Junior College, then got really adventurous two years later and rode my bike to Sac State. Paid my own way working summers as a ticket agent with Pacific Southwest Airlines. Took my senior year at Leiceister University in England, where I finally grew up. After graduation, bought a motorcycle and traveled around Europe with my girlfriend at the time, Liz Bachen. (Hmm. There appears to be a two-wheeled theme here, not sure what it means...) Anyway, got back to California in one piece, worked as an auditor for childcare centers for the State of California for six months and then went to Hastings Law School in S.F. Sat for the bar in the summer 1982 and sitting next to me in alphabetical order was Bob Heimbichner (La Sierra Class of 1974)! We both passed (he went on to work at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro in S.F.) and I spent a year clerking for Judge Lloyd King. Joined Buchalter, Nemer (an L.A. firm) in 1983 in their S.F. office. I fell in love with an associate (Mary Jameson -- her forehead number is at least 2 above mine), we married in 1989 and I made partner and we had our first child in 1990. She's now a sophomore at UCLA. Two other kids quickly followed, both now in high school. I'll post some photos once they can explain to me how to do it... Life has been full of surprises. In high school I was way too serious. I remember reading Paul Erlich's "The End of Affluence" and was convinced that we were headed into the dark ages from over-consumption. Remember gas lines and ...Expand for more
Jimmy Carter's sweater? Keeler and I seriously considered joining a commune sometime around 1975. Something to remember for those who worry now about 2012 or think the Rapture is coming. Today I'm writing this from my home office in Greenbrae. I moved my practice in 1998 to Marin to be closer to our kids while they grew up, and it was the best move I ever made. I was able to coach and manage my son's Little League teams (not that I did it particularly well, mind you) and my wife coached all of our daughters' basketball teams. To avoid distracting the kids, we only recently got cable and that was probably a mistake, but I do like watching Lost on HD, American Idol, Colbert and The Daily Show. Some of you probably remember me for my outspoken political views. Not much has changed. I'm an independent who voted for McCain over Bush in 2000, Gov. Arnie both times and Obama in 2008. It is unlikely there exists a political issue about which I don't have an opinion, but frankly none of them is particularly consistent. Living in the Bay Area, I don't see many La Sierra alumni, but I have met up with Heimbichner a few times to sample his home brew and take a mountain bike ride in the hills. I've made my own wine for years with a couple of baseball buddies. We call it Passing Lane for no particular reason. This year I planted about 16 Pinor Noir and Petite Verdot vines on our back hillside to give grape growing a try. I still stay in regular touch with my art teacher from La Sierra, Mike Stevens, and his wife Suzanne Adan (sister of the other art teacher, Jim Adan). So if anybody wants to know how or what they're doing, drop me a line. Well, that's about it. I'm starting to bore even myself, so it's time to stop. But I'd love to log in a few weeks from now and see stories from other La Sierra alum, so give it a try. It really wasn't that painful...
