Jeffrey's Story

Life I took a year off after high school to work and try to enjoy life. It became very apparent shortly thereafter, however, that I was wasting my life. After all, I was a cook for Denny's, lived in a single room apartment and had no plans for the future. I then decided to enlist in the US Air Force and do my duty. For six years I was an Air Force Pharmacy Technician and Combat Field Medic. My first base was K.I. Sawyer AFB in northern Michigan, just off the shore of Lake Superior, where I stayed until its closure in 1995. I was then sent to McConnell AFB in Wichita, Kansas, where I became acutely aware of a formerly unnecessary automotive amenity...air conditioning, which was now VERY necessary. Man I hated Kansas. It did bring me some joy however, in the discovery of my beautiful wife. After the completion of my 6 year enlistment in 1998, I gained acceptance into Oklahoma Baptist University, the nation's leading liberal arts school. I studied Biology-PreMed for a year before discovering my true love in Biochemistry in which I now hold a bachelors degree. Upon graduation from undergrad, I entered into Medical School in Des Moines Iowa from where I had recently graduated (May 06). I then entered into a surgical residency at Madigan Army Medical Center here in the Tacoma area. My wife and I purchased a house here in Spanaway where we lived for two years until completion of residency. I completed my residency in June 2008 and have since moved to the beautiful town of Sheridan, Wyoming where I have entered into private practice. I practice general podiatric medicine, diabetic wound care, sports medicine and foot and ankle surgery. It's nice to finally be out of the world of academia and partake in what life has to offer...or it was...until my student loans came due...ouch. Let it be known that ALL physicians (civilian) are POOR for the first 10-15 years of their professional career while paying back student loans. School Too much could be said here. SLHS was good. I enjoyed it more often than not. Made many friends, many of whom I haven't seen or spoken to in many, many years. I hope that will change soon. College Ah yes, undergrad. Not really a whole lot to say here. I spent 70 hours a week studying Chemistry, ...Expand for more
Organic Chem, Physical Chem., Biochem, Calculus (2 years of Calc.!!!), Physics, so on and so forth. My advisor and mentor at the time was Dr. Mark Hemric, who managed to run a chemistry department, maintain a VERY active role in church, put his family first and still have time for one on one instruction to the 2 students (myself and another) in his Advanced Biochemistry class. I can not speak of undergrad without also thanking God for providing me with such an understanding and patient wife who has given up much to allow me to pursue my goals. I love you Annette. In medical school, it was much worse. Each semester was 22+ credit hours, not including lab time. 100+ hours a week of studying was not at all uncommon for me and a large majority of others. Year two was slightly better, having gotten used to the pace and method of study necessary to succeed. Year three was AWESOME. Finally getting to practice medicine, diagnosing, treating, counseling and so much more. Fourth year was spent mostly in Washington state, at various hospitals and private practices as well as a few rotations in Oregon and Colorado. I performed my first surgery during this time, an endoscopic plantar fasciotomy. It was awesome. I did my surgical residency through the VA in Washington (American Lake and Seattle) with the majority of my cases performed at Madigan Army Medical Center. Upon completion of residency, I went into private practice in Sheridan, WY for three years before returning to work with and for my brethren-in-arms at the VA (Fort Harrison, MT) where I am currently on staff. In case you didn't quite catch that...I have not lived in one place longer than four years in the last 20. I am hoping not to move again. If I do, it will MOST CERTAINLY be the last time. Military I mentioned this in Life Bio. K.I.Sawyer AFB, MI '92-'95, McConnell AFB, KS '95-'98. My AFSC was 5P051, or Pharmacy Tech./Combat Field Medic. I enjoyed it for the most part. When Clinton came into office, it became an environment that I was eager to leave. So, after completion of my enlistment, I went to school, proud to have served, not at all desiring to return. I would, however, still serve if needed by my country, and would do so without question or complaint.
