Jenifer's Story
I'm still living in OKC, and I have a little boy named Max, who has been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. Because of this, and because of our BAD experience with the public school system, I have decided to take my career, as well as my life, in an entirely different direction. I am currently involved with Partners in Policymaking, a disability advocacy course sponsored by the Developmental Disabilities Council of DHS, and am becoming a stronger advocate for those with disabilities. I have also become more politically involved, as the policies and procedures surrounding children/people with disabilities are quite inadequate, and need an overhaul, if you will. The only way to change things is to get involved at the grass-roots level, and that is what I am doing. I have attended several conferences on disabilities and policymaking, and will also be helping out with some grants for children with disabilities...Expand for more
, specifically autism spectrum disorders. In addition, I also work full-time as a Family Support Coordinator for the Family Support 360 Center at OU Health Sciences Center, but still somehow find it possible to have a life, even in the midst of all this! I love to go out, have a beer or two with my friends, and catch live bands whenever possible. This may be the one thing that keeps me from going completely insane, as I'm usually up to my eyeballs in paperwork and whatever my son has going on at the time! I've changed a lot since high school; I'm a lot more outgoing, and much more 'in your face' about a lot of things. I don't mean that in a bad way, but I let myself get walked on A LOT back then, and that does not happen anymore. There are too many things I want and need to accomplish, and too many people that need help. So anyway, say hi if you stop by, and if you're ever in the OKC area, I'd love to catch up!
