Jennette's Story

After graduating from Mentor High I attended Lakeland Community College and Bowling Green State University, I obtained a bachelor of Science in Comprehensice Business Education with Shorthand. (I know. I am a relic. Who takes typing, or shorthand today? What's a typewriter? Carbon paper what's that?) I did my student teaching at Willoughby South and a year of substitue teaching in Mentor. (I could write a book about that.) There just weren't very many openings for my field in Northeast Ohio. Finally obtained a teaching job in the Northern Local School District of Perry County and moved to rural Sumerset, Ohio.about an hour outside of Columbus. Back in 1976 Columbus was not the city it is today. Summerset was like Mayberry RFD. We had a drug store, a post office, a four isle grocery store, laundry mat, antique store, hardware store, several churches, a diner, a gas station and a bar. There were no traffic lights. You could not get mail delivered and there were not enough post office boxes which meant general delivery status which in turn meant you good pick up mail on Saturday only between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. You would go to get gas or pick up your car being repaire and there would be a sign (Gone Hunting back tomorrow at 8 a.m.". My first year there was the year of the blizzard and I could only see outside if I looked out a second floor...Expand for more
window. They normally did not get more than a few inches of snow and were not prepared. School was closed for a full month. The town cleaned roads by having someone in the back of a pick up sprinkling salt from a coffee can. I lived in a public housing apartment, paid minimum rent by law even though my wages were lower and made me elligible for food stamps which I refused and had walls so thin that I heard my neighbors alarm clock which he slept through. I had to pound on the wall to wake him up. After two years I got homesick and moved back to Willoughby Ohio were I am today. I still could not find a teaching job so I used my skills and knowledge outside of teaching. I have been a CETA training Coordinator (2 years), taught a CETA business course at KSU in Burton, Ohio; did type setting and paste up at the News Herald; worked for Kelly Services doing clerical jobs part-time jobs (few days to 6 months); taught at a business school in downtown Cleveland (1 year); office manager for an office machine business (4 years) and Worker's Compenation Administrator for Avery Dennison also known as Fasson (24 years). If you are in the area, give us a call or come visit. Suzanne and I live two blocks from downtown Willoughby. We can watch socker and baseball games from our front porch and are within walking distance to the shops, bars and restaurants.
