Jennifer's Story
Life
WOW, where do I start? I got married in 1989 to my husband. I worked for 15 years doing the payroll and managing my dad's business. Then I retired and stayed home for 3 1/2. My dad whom was my best friend died in Aug. 2000. He was diagnosed in July of 1998 with Lung Cancer. Right after this I got pregnant with my second child. Daddy sold his business and boy am I glad! That second child has been somewhat of a miracle.
This is where I will pick up the story. In June of 1999 4 days before my daughter Tiffany and my hubby Kevin's birthday (they share the same birthday - don't think that anyone can top that birthday present). Our son Tristan arrived 6 weeks early. Well, to make a long story short.......
He is very special to me.....He started having problems at birth. Had his first surgery at 4 months old and has had numerous things since. Anyway, when my daddy died I never got to mourn for him....the next month Tristan was enrolled into the Early Intervention program in our County and started receiving speech and occupational therapy. Since the past 2 1/2 years have been very stressful and such, we have a diagnosis (THANKS TO ME FOR NEVER GIVING UP THAT MY BABY WAS AN UNDIAGNOSED CASE) it is Autism. He is between moderate and severe. He is totally non-verbal and he uses sign-language and PECS system (picture communication).
UPDATED.....Our son started trying to talk. He is now saying mommie and why. That is it but, a...Expand for more
t least he is trying. He trys my patience but, he now has given me hope!
I recently have gotten elected to the Autism Society of Middle Tennessee board and started the parent support group *Waves of HOPE* thru Waves Early Intervention Program.
UPDATE as of March 2007: Tristan is in 2nd grade and Tiffany is in 8th. She just made Varsity Football Cheerleader at IHS. I am still very involved in many special things to do with Autism. Tristan has been in several videos about Autism with ~ Dan Marino, Mark Eaton (Predators hockey player) and with his sister for many Vanderbilt Kennedy Center videos. He also has a best friend....Phil Vassar who is working on an Autism Awareness song. Phil's daughter Hayley cheers with Tiffany (on a different squad) at Premier's Competition Cheerleading.
Tristan is talking better but, it is still hard for someone to understand him. He has severe Apraxia and the Autism. He is very social!!! He breaks the mold for Autism!! He has OCD and ANXIETY. He does do well on his medication though.
My kids love sports, Tristan played basketball for his school and his team won 1st place. Tiffany's competition cheer squad won 1st place and the gym just won 4k in scholarship money. They both play soccer too. Tristan also likes football and baseball. I think after he turns 8 we will get involved with Special Olympics.
Well hope to hear from everybody soon.
Thanks, and have a great day!
