Jennifer's Story
Life
I moved to Indianapolis in 1991 to work for the Social Security Administration. I am a technical expert for SSA, and I work downtown. I married my second husband, Steve McAvoy, in June 2004. I have two kids, Nathan (age 16) and Rachel (age 13). I also have two step-children: Andrew (age 13) and Emily (age 11). I love the Indianapolis area, but I miss Michigan. It's hard to live down here with all these Boilermakers, Hoosiers and Fighting Irish, as a true blue Michigan football fan!! I enjoy reading, genealogy, and decorating my house.
College
I received a bachelor's degree in 1988 from Central Michigan University with a Political Science major and minors in Sociology and Women's Studies. I went to graduate school for two years at CMU. I FINALLY finished my thesis and received my Master's in Sociology in 1995. I loved CMU - my classes were small enough that I knew most of my professors well. I enjoyed being involved in politics, especially University Democrats and...Expand for more
the Creative Peace Movement. I strongly opposed apartheid in South Africa and the U.S. support of the Nicaraguan contras. My college years help shape my strong commitment to fighting for human rights and peaceful solutions (As you can guess, I'm not happy with current events in 2006!)
Besides the academic aspects to college life, I mostly remember walking in lots of snow, whether it was October or March! Also, I had so much fun with roommates - in Tate Hall (now torn down) and in Western Island Apartments.
I got married halfway through graduate school, and my son, Nathan, was born during my last semester at CMU. It sure was different to go from a college student, studying, having fun, drinking to MOM! But I loved it. I have warm memories of bringing Nate home from the hospital - I think we slid the whole last mile home! He was born a month early, and I worried that he would never gain weight - he was so tiny! But, I worried for nothing - he's now 6 feet tall.
