Jennifer's Story
Life
I was born on May 7, 1969 in Portsmouth, VA. I am the oldest child to two natives of Punxsutawney, PA (home of the Groundhog). My dad, career-military, was a Medical Service Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy. My parents retired back to their hometown. I have one younger brother, who is currently a Firearms Instructor/Officer for the U.S. Secret Service.
Because my father was career-military, I relocated frequently. I lived in Portsmouth, VA; Jacksonville (Camp Lejeune), NC; Gaithersburg, MD; Guam; Aurora, CO; Kingsville and Bishop, TX and Washington, DC. After leaving home, I also lived in Altoona, PA.
I attended 4 elementary schools, 4 Junior High/Middle schools, 3 High Schools and 2 universities. I graduated from Bishop High School in Bishop, TX in June of 1987. I then attended Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University  Kingsville) in Kingsville, TX where I majored in French and History Education for 5 semesters. After my dad was stationed in Washington, DC, I took a semester off from my studies and then transferred to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where I majored in History and minored in Political Science. I graduated from there with a B.A. in History in December of 1992. In July of 1992, I married Mearl Charley, a Navajo from the state of New Mexico.
In between the 2 universities, I worked as a clerk-typist in the Human Resources Department of the Merit Systems Protection Board in Washington, DC. After graduation, I spent 2 years as a substitute teacher for the Camp Lejeune Dependents Schools in Jacksonville, NC. I returned to Pennsylvania in the fall of 1995, and began working for C-COR.net Corp. in Tipton, PA. I wor...Expand for more
ked for that company for five years as an Executive Secretary. I then worked a year and a half for BenzelÂs Bretzels, Inc. as a Finance Clerk  but my duties included purchasing and inventory control. Mearl and I divorced in February of 2003. We still remain the best of friends.
I also worked a year for Mountain Research, LLC as the secretary to the Vice President of Marketing. I also volunteered with the Altoona Community Theatre and helped with production aspects of their plays for 2 seasons.
It was my days in the classroom that brought me the most satisfaction and in the spring of 2005, I found myself back at IUP to earn a B.S. in Social Studies Education and a minor in Educational Psychology, which I did in May of 2007.
While attending IUP for the second time, I was on the DeanÂs List for all 5 semesters. I was also a member of Phi Alpha Theta  Xi Beta Chapter, the History Honor Society. I was a member of the IUP Chapter of the Commonwealth Association of Students, and served as Secretary (2005  2006) and President (Fall 2006). I was elected Vice-President of the state level Commonwealth Association of Students and served in that office for the 2006-2007 school year. I was a founding member of the IUP Native American Heritage Council and also was a recipient of the IUP Council of Trustees Resolution of Recognition for Native American History and Culture. I was also involved with the History Club and was a member of the Educational Psychology Organization.
I am now teaching U.S. History for 7th Graders at Arcadia Middle School in Oak Hall, VA. After a few years, I would like to finish pursuing my Masters in Educational Counseling.
