Jennifer's Story

Life I guess you could say my life motto is "Where to next??" Despite having all the college opportunities available to me after High School, I entered into the Navy in 1993, served on an Aircraft Carrier (Lincoln) for 3 years. Got out w/ Med discharge, and moved to NJ with my daughter, Marissa. In finding a position out on the NAES Lakehurst Navy Base as an Environmental Technician, I met my current husband Scott *winks* a much better match for my personality then my ex-husband was, I assure you. Nothing like someone to enjoy life on every level. We are very much into outdoors. Our methods of madness include heavy 4x4ing (the real stuff....Got Mudd? Rock Crawling and Jeep Jamborees with heavily modified vehicles, 4x4ing in Paragon Offroad Adventures Park in PA, taking our quads - ATVs for you other lesser knowledge :) - anything and everything to get us out and pushing limits. We are adrenaline junkies and I think that has a lot to do with our choice of extracurricular activities *chuckles*. Along the way we had another daughter to add to our family...Robyn. Now Marissa is 11, and Robby is 7, and they crack us up. As far as everything else: Just as recently as last April I graduated and became a Massage Therapist, and also in April 09, Scott became a Commissioned Limited Duty Officer (LDO) in the Navy. Still a Seabee, but instead of being a Chief and leading crews, he's doing it from the Civil Engineer Corps side. *Chuckles* As far as how I am today,I am still pretty easy going and like to laugh and have fun *eyes twinkle*. Right now we all left CT and moved to MS (yayyyy Gulf Coast woot!). Enjoying soaking up the sands and sun, and once I get licensed to work in MS as a Massage Therapist, it's on! College I attended an IC "A" School in the Navy. 19 week course worth 60 credits transferable to a college should I be interested in working in Electronics again (which I am not). Received a full scholarship from the VA, for University of Washington (UW) Physical Therapy degree program upon being discharged from the Navy. Unable to attend do to a spouse's military move. Then I attended Oxnard College when Scott got stationed at Port Hueneme, due to location and availability of an Nursing Degree course. Of course we transferred JUST as my name popped up on the waiting list to start the Nursing Courses lol. So we moved BUT *grins* I still manages to get an Associates Degree in there lol. I will probably have 3 degrees by the time my family and I retire from the Navy, and none from the same school. All are in progress. ;) Gotta love traveling! LOL. I guess I just like learning....I did manage to go to UCONN for a bit, but the Environmental Reseach work in the Long Island Sound took me away from home too much, so I dropped that...and then Massage Therapy dropped into my lap out of nowhere. Who would have guessed? Turns out it feels like I should have been doing massage all along lol! Guess the rest of my schooling was just a bunch of pit stops along the way ;o) Doesn't matter now. I've found my "Calling" and it's awesome! Workplace Was Active Duty Navy from 1993-1996. Upon getting out, I accepted a position with Tecom-Vinnell Services in Lakehurst, NJ. Worked as a contractor on the NAES Lakehurst Navy Base as and Environmental Technician. Obtained over 11 environmental awards for the base through out the next 4 years from OSHA, EPA, and various other programs. Worked in Hangars 2 & 3, ones that are currently ...Expand for more
Machine, Welding, Arresting Engine, Terminal, and JBD shops. The Hangars, in the past, were once used to be Hangars for the large Zeppelin (like the Hindenburg) air balloons that used Lakehurst as an airstrip. Lakehurst is where the Hindenburg crash occurred. As an Environmental Technician I was responsible for hazardous materials, inventory, waste streams, hazardous waste collection and containment sites, maintaining EPA standards within a Large Quantity Generator by conducting compliance inspections....*grins* I was the only female whipping 400+ men and women into environmental shape and I made a lot of good friends and had an awesome time there. Best career move (civilian) I could have made. The position was a perfect 50/50 between office work and being able to work in the field (which I love). There has to be something said about a woman who gets to drive forklifts and move 600lb drums of waste around, and be the supervisor ensuring that the aircraft carriers being supplied by our production shops in the Hangars get the Jet Blast Deflector shields and Arresting Engines they need in Fleet Emergencies because the Environmental Team was able to provide the Materials necessary to get the job done....I love working in Environmental! When my husband and I left NJ, I was sad to leave Environmental work. However, once in CA I went back to school and received my degree. After THAT, we went to CT, as usual with military spouses, my career changed again lol. *Grins* Not that you will hear me complain. Massage Therapy is far more rewarding then anything I have ever done before. Something about helping someone with Pain Management from rehab services, or just getting an athlete mobile again for the next big game, or even calming down a military spouse who deals with a pretty stressful life by offering an escape from life and stress, one hour at a time ;o) Not to mention it fits into our military lifestyle like a glove...what better way to spend your life then being home for your kids and family AND having a portable career that will move with you as often as you do? Sweetness... Military USN Active Duty 1993-1996. Attained E4. Stationed on USS Abebraham Lincoln CVN-72. Was one of the first group of 20 women stationed onboard the aircraft carrier. Ship was stationed in San Francisco and then Everett, WA. Was an Interior Communications Specialist (IC3), maintained all electrical components of the ship, as well as communications, steering, gyros, and worked in Aft IC in the Reactor Spaces. Went on West Pac in 1995 for 6 month deployment to Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, UAE, Hawaii, dipped below the equator for Wog Day (Austrailia was canceled due to technical problems with a sister carrier. Lincoln postponed in the Persian Gulf extra month). Was submitting package for becoming Officer. Package was accepted for Review, and then I blew out knees onboard the aircraft carrier during a General Quarters in which our carrier crashed into a supplier ship we were doing vert reps with (Sacramento). Was scheduled for surgury, declined medical surgury by Navy, and was given medical release from Active Duty. Wish like hell I was still Active Duty military....loved it! :) Guess I just live vicariously now through my husband's exploits lol! We love being a military family and I am pretty damn sure you have to be made of some special stuff to live our lifestyle AND thrive in it like we do... All in all..."Life's fun. Just Do It" lol
