Jennifer's Story

Life I started to work for Roth Pump in MIlan, Il. as a receptionist part time while I attended college at Scott Community. I worked there until 1990 when I was hired as a long distance operator for MCI communications. I continued college but after 5 months at MCI, I was offered a promotion to management as a monitor for our operators. I quit college and was hoping to start a career with MCI in management. I worked in that position for nearly a year, went on vacation for a week, came back and the offices were closed. This set the tone for the next decade:). I was hired at Bawden Printing (now Von Hoffmann) and worked as a customer service rep. for Deere and Company. I worked full time, while part time I was in an alternative band called BEV writing music and performing around the states of Iowa and Illinois. The lifestyle didn't suit someone of my nature, to say the least, but I did have a lot of fun. The band split up in 1993 and I met my son's father. We were together and planned to get married and I became pregnant with my son in 1995. I continued to work at Bawden and also enrolled in college part time after he was born. His father and I parted ways in 1997 (one of many breakups- but that's a whole other story) I worked part time taking care of children at the same daycare my son was enrolled in while continuing to go to college. I ended up quiting school again to do daycare in my home so that I could be closer to my son and also so that I could try to wo...Expand for more
rk on a life with his father. We split up for good in 2000 and I went to work full time at Von Maur in their credit department. My mom and dad divorced and my mother moved to Ireland. In October of 2001 I sold all of my belongings and my son and I moved to Ireland to be with my mom to start a new life. We lived there until April of 2002 when I realized I could not get work overseas legitimately (I was working there, but getting paid under the table-which is highly illegal) That on top of the fact that my mother had decided to come back to the States abruptly, and left us in December...but again that's another story :). So, I came back to the U.S. and enrolled in college again- this time completing my education in 18 months, and getting an associate degree in Travel/Business Management. My son and I are doing ok living in Rock Island. I work part time in the transportation industry. I'm still looking for a job that will enable me to better apply my education as well as allow me to have time for my son as a single mom. For now though, I'm content having alot of time to spend WITH him and having a little money to spend ON him :). It's a fair trade I think -and besides-he's brilliant...He's definitely the best thing to come from the 90's in my life-that's for sure. I really couldn't ask for a much more interesting life. I've learned so much more than I ever thought I would, and loved much more than I really wanted to at times. But what is life if not for living?
