Jere's Story
I only went to Lakeview one year (61), but it was my Sr. year and was lots of fun. I was known as the "Southern Belle" because I had just come from Lousiana, and had a deep southern accent. I was asked to read aloud in English my first day in school, and by the end of my reading, every eye in class was on me. I was very shy, but it helped me make friends fast.
I attended MSU for one year, then continued moving around the country with my family (Air Force). I worked in CA until I got married in 1967. I have now been married for 50 years to the same man. We have 2 terrific sons and 2 beautiful grand daughters.
As I continued moving around the country, now with my husband, I did various & sundry office jobs. I worked Civil Cervice at Ft. Wainwright, AK. When we moved to NC, I stayed home with my sons for several years. I wouldn't trade those years for all the money I could have had working.
Even though we have had 2 dogs during our marraige, we are really "cat people". We love the independence of cats and the fact they are not as "needy" as dogs. We've enjoyed the different personalities of each one we've had.
When my youngest son started school, I decided to try something different. I seemed to be good at doing artificial nails (I did my own because I couldn't afford to have them done), so I worked part-time while the boys were in school. That ended up being an 18-year career during which I won several competitions.

n nails by 1999. At the time I was volunteering as a tutor at a local Adult Literacy program. I ended up applying for a vacancy as the Director of the program, and was hired.
From '99 until Jan., '08 I quickly learned an entirely new career, made speeches, wrote grants, attended workshops and conventions, organized fund raisers, had nationally recognized students, trained volunteer tutors, and finally worked to have the program nationally accredited before retiring. Whew! What a career to take on so late in life.
I am totally retired in Jan of '08, and my husband retired 2 years later. We traveled for a little while, visiting my folks in OK, husband's folks in NE, and the Grand Canyon!. A few years ago I visited Michigan again with a local Seniors' club. We went to Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, and Mackinaw City. Then we began remodeling the house! People ask, "What are you doing now?" and I reply, "Whatever I want to!!" I love it! I belong to 2 knitting clubs, and have recently joined a women-only gun club! Target shooting and archery are really fun!
I occasionally take some community college classes, I am painting, gardening, am writing my congressmen regularly, web browsing, helping sometimes with grand children and mother-in-law, and have recently become politically active.
I am blessed with: good health, a loving husband, both my sons live here, and my house is paid for! However, we are now looking to downsize and move....AGAIN!!! Such is life....it's a blessing!!!
