After graduation, I enrolled at Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas to study engineering. There I met and married
Jimmie Pearl Zaplac in 1961. Jimmie is a 1959 graduate of Alice High School. We both worked while attending
school and I graduated from Texas A&I in 1964 with BS Degree in General Engineering. I managed to cram a
four year program into five years and two summer sessions. We moved to Houston, Texas in June of 1964 and I
went to work for Fluor Engineering and Construction as a structural engineer. Worked for Fluor from 1964 until
2001 during which time we lived in a multitude of different and interesting places. Saudi Arabia -1982 to 1984. I
lived in a man camp on the Kuwait border and Jimmie and our daughter Stacey lived in a family camp in
Rahima about 250 kilometers south. I drove home each Thursday evening for a short weekend and returned to
the man camp on each Saturday morning; very tough duty for Jimmie. Greenville, SC - 1988 to 1998. The most
pleasant of all assignments. While in SC we both took up the game of golf and became addicted...Expand for more
to the sport.
Had our children not been in Texas, we likely would have retired there. Other interim locations: The Netherlands
â one year â I was working most of the time but Jimmie got to see a lot of Europe by being part of two western
womenâs clubs. She became a real âDutchieâ and learned to travel by bicycle and public transportation. New
Jersey â Short stay while heading up a new chemicals division. And then returned to SC to head up the
Greenville office Venezuela â a short six months stay for me; Jimmie stayed in SC. India â six months for me
while Jimmie stayed in SC. While this was later in my career, it was one of my most enlightening assignments. I
had traveled extensively and seen a lot of poor areas in different countries. I had never seen poverty and filth
like this in any other location in the world. It is mind boggling. This experience and exposure to lifestyles in other
countries reinforced my belief that there is no place like the good old United States of America. Jimmie and I
both love to play golf and currently live in a golf course community in Huntsville, Texas. Both children live in
Texas. Stuart lives in Sugar Land, Texas about 100 miles from us and Stacey lives in Dallas, Texas about 170
miles from us. We have no grand children - darn!
