By ELAINE LOUIE
Karen Louise Koenig and Jerome Jay Solomon are to be married Sunday on the Royal Princess yacht, which will be sailing in Lincoln Harbor, Weehawken, N.J. Rabbi Eric M. Solomon, a nephew of the bridegroom, will officiate with his wife, Rabbi Jennifer Sherling Solomon.
The bride, 59, is an assistant professor and the bridegroom, 65, is a professor, both in the department of environmental medicine at the New York University School of Medicine in Manhattan. The department focuses on asbestos, radon and other factors in the environment.
Dr. Koenig, who will keep her name, graduated summa cum laude from Ithaca College and received a doctorate in environmental health sciences from N.Y.U. She is a daughter of Louise Okerson Koenig and Henry August Koenig, who lived in Freehold, N.J.
Dr. Solomon is also the director of N.Y.U.'s graduate program in environmental health sciences. He graduated cum laude from Brooklyn College and has a doctorate in physical chemistry from Cornell. He is a son of Beatrice Solomon and Reuben Solomon,...Expand for more
who lived in Brooklyn.
Dr. Koenig and Dr. Solomon, who have been a couple for more than 40 years, first met in 1969 in Ithaca, N.Y., where both attended a student meeting at Cornell. Their paths crossed again on Halloween, when Dr. Solomon, an amateur photographer, went to Ithaca College to use a darkroom.
ÃÂWe'ÃÂve been together ever since,ÃÂ Dr. Solomon said.
But why the wait to marry?
For one, there was a religious issue. Dr. Solomon wanted to be married by his nephew, but could not do so until Dr. Koenig found a Hebrew name and converted to Judaism. In 2008, after the death of Dr. Solomon's mother, whose Hebrew name was Brucha, Dr. Koenig adopted the name and converted.
That December the subject of marriage was raised again after Dr. Koenig received a diagnosis of kidney disease.
Dr. Solomon said he then realized, If we're not married, and if we weren'ÃÂt located at N.Y.U., I wouldn'ÃÂt be able to participate in her care.ÃÂ (Dr. Koenig'ÃÂs illness has since been brought under control.)
And their final reason for marrying now?
ÃÂFinancial,ÃÂ Dr. Solomon said. ÃÂTo protect each other.ÃÂ ELAINE LOUIE
