Jerry's Story
My family moved from Hamilton AFB to Atascadero after my junior year, so I didn't graduate from SRHS. I went to UCSB and graduated with a degree in history and a US Army commission. Twenty-four years later I retired from the Army and started my own small business, providing historic uniforms for movies, stage production, museums, etc. I still find time for some adventurous travel to obscure places like Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Actually got within a few miles of Osama's hideout at one point. Then there are regular business trips to Dubai and India, but my friends there are always showing me new places.
Looking back I have come to appreciate what San Rafael High did to help prepare me for Real Life. Some of those teache...Expand for more
rs really drove us, but it payed off later. I feel like my college courses actually started in the 9th grade, and UC wasn't hard to get used after that kind of preparation.
Who still remembers "aus, ausser, bei, mit, nach seit, von und zu" from second year German? We were assured we would remember those words the rest of our lives, even if we forgot what they meant. And I still encounter obscure English words that I remember were in the two vocabulary books that Mr. Ewing made us memorize. Often I don't remember what they mean, but I remember where I first encountered them. I haven't retained enough geometry or algebra to solve any of the problems Mr. Bone gave us, but the training in basic logic has proved useful through my life.
