Jerry's Story
I started working for Derby Coal & Oil evenings after school and weekends and stayed with them after I graduated until being drafted in Oct-66. When I got out of the Army in 1968 I was at Fort Hood Texas. Heading for home I would stop along the way and spend some time seeing what was between Texas and Connecticut. Ran out of money in Peoria, Ill. Got a job with a printing company called Fleming & Potter. Ended up being a pressman, printing labels for Liption Tea, Whisbone Salad Dressings and so on but there main business was liquor labels. 90% of the labels on the package store shelves I have printed at one time or another. For a little over 35 years those labels for Bacardi, Jack Daniels, Seagram's, Jim Beam, and the like have been printed by me. Got married in 1971. Had a daughter in 1976. It's always been nice to be home. I had 2-1/2 years to go when the company went bankrupt in Dec.-03. I couldn't draw my pension early because of a family illness & health insurance issues. Along with selling some of my toys I had enough squired away to get...Expand for more
me to age 60. It took a little while to get caught up after the pension checks began coming in but buy the end of 2006 I had reached my life time goal of "Rich Enough to Live Poor". It's like skipping school every day. Still playing with the cars and motor cycles. A 1937 Ford coupe I built won an award at the Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals in Indianapolis Ind. in 1996 and the motor cycle I posted a picture of
(Check out video) is in the Choppers Field Guide by Doug Mitchell (page's 68-73). I got into collecting & restoring antique outboard motors 1998 and now spend most of my time playing them.

As I look back, time after time, I was just in the right place at the right time starting with the time we grew up. I can't imagine a better time to be a kid especially if you were a gear head like me.
