Jerry's Story

Please Google Jerry Ross and find my Wikipedia article for Jerry Ross, painter. Also Google Kenmore and you will find me listed as a notable person. Basically, I attended the University of Buffalo right after graduating. I got involved in anti-Vietnam War protests and organizing. I was a math major at first but then changed that to philosophy and full time protesting. I was arrested many times in Buffalo, eventually getting on the radar of J. Edgar Hoover who tried to get me drafted. Unfortunately for him, my arrest blotter never cleared long enough for me to get drafted. I was once ordered to report for induction but when I got there I was shown a list of subversive organizations and I checked the box next to each one of them. What angered me was that they had listed the Buffalo Jewish War Veterans as a subversive organization. When they saw I had checked that box and all the others, they told me to go home! I was eventually tried in Federal Court of Buffalo in what became known as the Buffalo Nine Trials. This lasted several months with big protests downtown and on campus by U of B students. I received a "hung jury" and was then retried and again, the jury could not reach a decision on my case and the case was eventually dropped.. Before leaving Buffalo, I organized the Martin Sostre Defense Committee. Sostre was an Afro-American anarchist book seller in Buffalo who ran the Afro-Asian Bookstore. He was targeted by police during the 1968 riots in the Afro-American community there. Martin was sentenced to 43 years in prison but was eventually released due to efforts by Amnesty International and Governor Carey of New York after the state trooper that testified against Martin was caught stealing drugs from a police evidence locker (an act used to frame innocent people). Whenever I found a job in buffalo, the FBI would visit the employer and I would get fired. This happened three times and I decided to leave the area for Arizona. I lived and worked there for several years. I had attened Buffalo state Teachers College before leaving Buffalo and so secured a teaching position teaching at a small Mexican-American school in Naco near Bisbee Arizona. After that I hitchhiked through Europe after visiting my sister in London. I spent time in Spain and Germany and then returned to Arizona where I taught T'ai chi chuan in public parks. I was a hippy by then and was experimenting with Peyote and LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs like mushrooms. I arrived back in Tucson with 75 cents in my pocket but was able to crash on the porch of friends and was soon back on my feet substitute teaching and teaching . I eventually hitched a ride to Eugene, Oregon where I applied for teaching jobs and substitute taught. I began teaching Tai Chi Hayward Field and pretty soon had a class of twenty or so students. I met my second wife Angela at the Ken Kesey œPoetic Hoo Haw at the University of Oregon. This event featured poets Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder and Ken Kesey himself. Angela and I have been together ever since (38 years!). She inspired me to go back to graduate school at the U of O (she had earned her MA in Instructional Technology earlier) and I was working as a computer instructor at the local Radio Shack Computer Center. I eventually earned my MA in Interdisciplinary studies (mostly œComputers in Educa...Expand for more
tion Program under Dr. David Moursund). Shortly after graduation I got a job at Lane County as Manager of Education and Documentation at its Regional Information System (RIS). My parents moved (on my advice) from Kenmore to Eugene. they eventually settled in Yachats, Oregon (on the coast) where Angela managed to find them an apartment. They both had serious medical issues but this was a good transition location for them. Eventually they moved back to Eugene to be closer to medical care. Martin Sostre was eventually pardoned by Governor Carey of New York. Sakharov, the famous Russian human rights advocate and writer, had petitioned the Governor to release Martin but it wasn't until the arresting officer was caught stealing drug evidence from the State Police evidence locker, that Carey acted to pardon him. Many years later, I worked for the Silvia Baraldini Defense Committee national whose father was an embassador in Washington but she had gotten involved with certain violent Black nationalists. Anyway, be it as it may, I travelled to Italy and assisted her relatives in the northern committee working on her behalf. I attended a meetng in Florence and spoke in Italian urging them to place a full-page ad in the New York Times to familiarize Americans with her case. After living in Oregon for many years concentrating on arts grass-roots organizing, I founded many groups, most recently "Club Macchia" based on the I Macchiaioli of Italy. My current project is on my web site at pittore44 "at" yahoo "dot" com. Cheers, Jerry To all: I have been to Italy for vacation and business about 26 times. Recently I applied for a painting residency in Renkum, Holland and was accepted. I went there for 30 days in 2017 and upon my return exhibited my work at the Tronson Gallery of Contemporary Art in Springfield, Oregon. Currently, I have a painting exhibit at the Wayne Morse US Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon. After the school shootings in Florida, I have renewed my efforts to find the poem I wrote for The Flame in high school. I wrote a poem called "Where...." perhaps "Where has American gone..." something like that which has a line in I about the Texas school tower shootings which was I think the first mass shooting in the USA. Anyway, when the Flame came out, the K West Principal Mr. Fraizer ordered me into his office and scolded me for writing it. If anyone has that issue of the Flame, please email me a copy of the poem. I have been trying to find it for years. This was similar to my experience as Art Editor of the Kenitorial (Year Book). I wanted a completely new look and feel for the yearbook -- a red cover and no cartoons --- which was approved by the students working on the yearbook. When the advisor found out, I was removed from th Art Editor position and kicked off the yearbook project. That was another example of K. West suppression of my creating efforts. In addition, I once tried to invite an African-American jazz band to perform for a student assembly. Principal Fraizer chewed me out for that effort as well and the concert planning was cancelled. Just a few high school experiences that helped shape me for the future. Only catch: I need to raise my own money to cover expenses. For more information: Please support me in this effort at any level. Send news, Cheers, Jerry More soon…
