Jerry's Story
My wife, Pat (Oliver - class of '67), has retired from teaching in the Farmington School district. We have two sons, David and Michael. David is married, has his doctorate in history and is currently managing political campaigns in Virginia. Michael hasn't married (but is engaged) and we have no grandchildren. We've always lived in Michigan but travel extensively. We just went on a French, German river cruise and week in Poland to celebrate Pat's milestone birthday and then off to NYC and then. Italy to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.
I practiced law for twenty years after getting my BA in Political Science, Masters in Labor and Industrial Relations at MSU and law degree at U of M. My specialties were Tax and Securities law but as a young lawyer I did everything from divorces, to DUIL's to a murder case. I was the first in the state to master the Federal Campaign Finance Act and was counsel to three Republican US Senate candidates, among others. other (45 attorneys) and then ran my own boutique securities law practice (3 of us) for a couple years to transition out of the business and transfer my clients to others.
Midway through my legal career I started an investment management firm (Flexible Plan Investments, Ltd.). It grew steadily through the 80's and finally by '93 I was ready to leave the law and grow my business full time. It's been wonderful and I haven't missed the law for a second! And I'm still leading the firm as we go into our 40th year.
The firm now employs over 90 and we have managed over $2 billion in assets and close to 30,000 accounts. In 2004 we started our own mutual funds and now have 9 of them. Because it's a very compliance oriented business I still have lots of legal matters to consider (2 other attorneys are on staff) but I also spend time marketing, sales, strategic planning and investment management and research (Tom Waring (class of '65) got me hooked on investment research when I was in my Masters program at State and I couldn't shake it.)
