Jerry Beckett:

CLASS OF 1985
Winter park, FL

Jerry's Story

Since '85: Sept. '85: Went to Michigan State Sept. '85: Left Michigan State after 3 days. What can I say, I had never been away from home before and I freaked out. Jan. - May '86: Went to UCF. Didn't like it much. Aug. '86: Gave going away to college another chance. Went to U. of Kansas. Dec. '86: After injuring both shoulders a month and a half before high school graduation, I had my left shoulder operated on. April '88: Thrown out of U. of Kansas May '88-Aug '90: Worked various crappy jobs. Grew up some. Dec. '89: After injuring both shoulders a month and a half before high school graduation, I had my right shoulder operated on. Aug '90-May'92: Earned 3.9 GPA at UCF May '92: Visited U. of Notre Dame. I applied as a transfer student. Got accepted. Aug. '92: Began fall classes at Notre Dame as a 25 year-old sophomore. March '94: Had right shoulder operated on again, this time by the folks at South Bend (IN) Orthopedics, the docs who do most of the surgery for the Notre Dame football team. May '95: Graduated ND with a BS in Computer Engineering June '95 - June '97: Lived and worked in Austin, TX as a computer hardware designer. June '97-June 2002: Lived in Baltimore, MD doing software development. Sister Betty (married in '91) lived there also, though she and family (6 kids!!!) moved to NJ in 2001. June '02 - May '03: Moved back to Orlando to try to find a job amidst the technology industry downturn. Was not successful. May '03 - Sept. '04: Lived and worked as software engineer in Wash DC area. DC sucks. Too expensive, too hard to get around, everyone obsessed with their jobs. Sept. '04: Moved to Dallas, TX to work in Kodak Health Imaging's software dept. Loved Dallas. Low cost of living, great restaurants, easy to get around, everyone's pretty laid back. Oh, and the women are gorgeous. Feb. '05: Met Lynda (future wife). The vital stats: Hometown: El Paso, TX Age: Same as mine Status: Never been...Expand for more
married Hair: Black Height: 5' 7" Wt.: 118 Profession: CPA Education: Texas A&M, degree in Accounting Religion: Roman Catholic Pets: 1 dog, Tipper, who loves me Disposition: Always happy, always smiling, always optimistic....basically, the opposite of me. Why she loves me: She apparently has low standards and poor eyesight. April '06: Bought first pair of boots in Mazatlan, Mexico. Black python skin. I have since added a pair of black stingray boots and a pair of black-cherry alligator belly boots to my collection. I also now listen to country music, along with rock. Betty says I've "gone native". Still won't wear a cowboy hat, though..... Aug. '06: Had right shoulder operated on again. Pain mostly due to scar tissue from first 2 operations. Damn. Sept. '06: Proposed to Lynda underneath giant oak tree beside St. Mary's Lake behind the Grotto on the U. of Notre Dame campus. She said 'yes'. April '07: Married Lynda in her hometown of El Paso, TX. Went to Rome for honeymoon. Shook hands with Pope Benedict XVI at Wednesday audience. Feb. and May '08: Diagnosed with Arterial Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (collarbone and top rib too close together), I was losing my pulse in my arms and was in almost constant pain. Had top rib on both sides taken out. Weird, but necessary. Now - more or less fully recovered. Present: Work at Goldleaf Financial Solutions in Dallas doing Windows application and web page development. Also free-lancing as web developer for The Catholic Legate (a research group) and involved with the Sycamore Trust (a group dedicated to protect and enhance the Catholic identity of the U. of Notre Dame). Looking forward to adding to new family. Lynda and I welcomed our first child, Maria Rosa Guadalupe Beckett, in April 2009. That's the great thing about marrying someone of Mexican heritage: you don't fret about picking a first and middle name for your child; just pick the names you like and string 'em all together.
