Jessica's Story
Life
September 05, 2008 Update
Hello everyone! How are you? It's been so, so, long.
Here's an update on what's been going on in my life:
I still live in the mountains near Asheville, NC but a move to Europe is coming next summer 09. I'm not sure where to yet, its all kind of new, but I am excited to be going!
I usually go by Naomi now, though Jessica is still my legal name. If you haven't heard how I got from Joe to Naomi - its a long story that began quite some time ago.
I'm still in the nonprofit/activist field. I run an organization called Four Directions Solidarity Network. We work with Indigenous (native) communities from around the world to preserve traditional native culture. We formed to work in Louisiana with the coastal tribes immediately after Hurricane Katrina/Rita and we also do alot of work with the Lakota Nation.
I also still do a little work related to social/global justice, civil liberties, environmental protection, and provide professional facilitation to groups/nonprofits, and other sorts of progressive training. I also do graphic design work. But my Indigenous work is what makes me the most fulfilled and happy.
I have a partner of five years named Susan. We have two cats and two jack russell terrorists.. er.. terriers. I still love the ocean - and yes...Expand for more
, I did become a marine biologist before turning to nonprofit work!
Sometimes I cannot believe how much my life has changed since high school. I grew up with many of you - some of you from first grade! I knew Paul Willis in kindergarden! Now, here we are in our 40s (is that possible? I don't feel 42!) And life continues to move on for us all... both the struggles and the successes.
One day my partner asked if I had any ghosts from high school - did it still haunt me? I told her no, it doesn't haunt me but I wished I could have been the 'real' me back then. Of course who would have understood? I didn't even understand what I was dealing with back then. And I wouldn't be the same person I am today, or learned all the lessons about people and life that I've been blessed to learn.
I hope each of you are well. And if you have families, partners, significant-others and loved-ones - that you all are happy and healthy. If you have kids - I hope they fill you with wonder and delight in their sometimes obstacle-ridden youth. We were those kids once - many of us still have those stories of Oak Knoll and East Point.
If anyone wants to contact me - I'de be happy to hear your voice or read your message though I dont have Gold membership. Until then - take care.
