Jim's Story

Updated: Spring '22 Facts Of Life Thus Far: HOOOOORAY ... We're still here!! Currently, I'm STILL teaching as a full tenured Professor with the Seneca Polytechnic diploma/degree broadcast programs, (I love what I do), I have served as Radio Program Coordinator and Chair of the School of Communication Arts but turned down the permanent positions. Whoda thunk it?...ME, a full-blown academic...hahaha! (Gracie Gray, is spinning in disbelief!) I love and prefer the classroom (twice nominated as Ontario's best lecturer). Turning 79 this January (2024) but hope to continue for another 5 or 10 or 25 years. harharhar Had a four decade plus broadcast career ... 20 years as on-air radio and television personality prior to programming, sales & marketing, station management and ownership. This fall I will mark the 60th anniversary of the day I walked into CJOY to begin my first broadcast job. WOW! That's way more than HALF A CENTURY!!!!! Also worked extensively in corporate communications, advertising, and with charitable agencies. Former shareholder and sign-on Operations Mgr and Programmer of Canada's first smooth jazz radio station in Hamilton. (They turned it into a country station a few years after I left.) As a side-gig, I spent ten years as contract National Programmer of the CBC Galaxie/now Stingray Smooth Jazz channel piped into about 12 million or so homes across the country via satellite and digital cable. (Bell, Rogers, Shaw, etc). Combined teaching post-secondary with broadcasting etc since '85. Still do a bit of CRTC consulting & talent coaching for radio and TV. Married 55 years to Gayle (Bolley-GCVI '66). She retired from the Middlesex Health Unit in '07. Two "children": Son Cameron, 52, Mac U grad, computer IT and Internet Marketing Specialist and recently accepted a full-time position with Cambridge University. Also does projects for Western U School of Music, U of T Conservatory & Koerner Hall and many artists, musicians, etc). AND beautiful, brash 2012 leap-yeardaughter Sloane who was skateboarding at 2 1/2 and does gymnastics (crazeee, no-fear, and supreme balance) and competitive swimming. She is fully bilingual and very creative and theatrical. After Collingwood, Sudbury, and 7 years in KW doing radio & television (original host of Bowling for Dollars hahahaha), and studies at WLU ... then a couple out west in Winnipeg and Edmonton, we landed in London in '75. ttled there for 32 years where, in addition to our careers, we did lots of "do-gooder" stuff ..... Gayle with her Hospice work (Volunteer of the Year twice) etc, and me with a myriad of charitable boards and committees including United Way, Goodwill, Heart & Stroke, Cancer, Diabetes, Lung Assoc, Hospice, and corporate fundraising for the Ontario Science Centre Omnimax. In Aug '07, upon Gayle's retirement from her Dental Educator position at the Middlesex/London Health Unit, we moved to a fabulous post & beam retreat/reno project on 3 1/2 acres with ponds, a river running through it, and lots of trees to cut in the Northumberland Hills between Port Hope and Peterborough. But, after 4 years, the physical demands of the property, health issues, plus an ugly commute to the York campus motivated our shift to Barrie in late 2011. We've renovated a lovely raised bungalow on a 400' deep wooded lot across from Sunnidale Park, and I'm sailing Lake Simcoe aboard a little Tanzer 22 christened "All But Six" (about the name ? ... scroll below). I'm currently teaching partly online in virtual classrooms, in the Seneca College School of Media Radio Broadcasting Program. Gayle keeps busy with Seniors for Seniors, gardening, demolition & painting, and shopping & lunching with Jane Maltby (nee Worton, married to McGill) and Marion Wink (nee Dool married to Jerry) All have a GCVI past. I did two bouts with cancer over the past few years, prostate in '08 and, although I stopped smoking on my 30th birthday, had lung cancer surgery in fall 2010 (followed by heart angioplasty and a stent). I'm one lucky Irishman ...... they caught all VERY early! However, I have had an aggressive recurrence that I'm fighting now with chemo, meds, etc etc etc. Thus,, I'm a two-time survivor and intend to do it again and put a 1 in front of my age on Jan 2, 2045. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it! Be in touch. Slainte mhaith, Jim Craig PS: GENTLEMEN...have you had a PSA test recently? LADIES a mammogram? EVERYONE...have you had a colonoscopy?..... And a recent chest xray? DO IT!!! You'll live much longer! (Scroll) Addendum re boat name: Wull yuh noo, aye ramember me auld sour Irish Gran'pap used ta growl under his breath "All But Six" whenever he disagreed with someone, or a person he disliked entered the room. He passed just before I turned six, and we moved shortly thereafter away from Palmerston to Guelph. But, I always remembered that saying. For years, I pondered what was the meaning of his muttering, but never found out ... UNTIL one day about 40 years later, as I was reading Trinity (Leon Uris), it jumped off the pages at me! In the book, the patriarch of the Larkin family, old Connor, (a character much like me Irish grandpa) muttered "all but six"! I fell off my chair, jumped up, dusted myself off, and read on. A few paragraphs later the entire saying was revealed! "Fook 'em all but six, 'cause ya need six fer pallbearers." What a perfect true philosophy of life. Also a GREAT name for a wee sailboat! All But Six!!!
