Jim's Story
Life
I got my GED in Dec.'78, so officially, I'm class of '79, but I'll always be class of '80.
2 days after taking my GED, I was in the navy.
we parted ways at their request in 1981.
Later that year, I had a life-altering experience; the end result is that I came back to California and went to college.
This was a "religious" experience, and I became a preacher for about the next 4 years.
I hadn't slowed my drinking down much and I was still dealing with drug issues, so I don't think I was a very effective preacher.
After 4 years my church asked me to change my profession.
I took their advice and became a full time drunk.
While in this stupor I was married and divorced twice.
I finally got sober over 20 years ago, and my life couldn't be better!
I've been married and divorced a couple of times, and I have two wonderful daughters (Beverly age 27 and Amanda age 20) I have a grandson Victor who turned 6 years old on May 28th.
I was the neighborhood ice cream man for over a dozen years with the same company. ( and a total of over 20). I went back to school!! I attended the CAARR (California association of addiction recovery resources) and became an "alcoholism and drug addiction specialist". A fancy way of saying a drug counselor. Along the way, I got my Masters in Psych...Expand for more
ology and my Doctorate in Divinity.
I owned a detox facility until the "economic downturn". I still do couples and family counseling and perform weddings occasionally. The state of California granted me a certificate of rehabilitation in August 2010, and my pardon was signed by the Governor in 2017 (Oh, yeah. I almost forgot to mention, I got into some trouble a quarter-century ago) I am very active in my community, recently serving on a tri-county panel helping find resources and housing for the homeless in Amador, Calaveras, and Tuolumne counties . I spend time volunteering at the local detox and at the Salvation Army men's facility.
I've been on a committee organizing the largest annual 'recovery-based' convention in northern California off and on for the past fifteen years. One year I was honored to be one of the speakers.
I've reached out to some of my old high school friends. Some of us are friends on Facebook. One or two haven't responded at all. I understand this. It reminds me to be a better friend today than I was yesterday.
Today I'm a bus driver. I love driving and I get to do what I love.
