Jim's Story

First things first. The pic. I included is me on vacation, and yes I did spend too much time in the sun. ... I never graduated from Simi High. I managed to finish at night school, and attend college at Southern Indiana University. I left for the Marine Corps between my Sophomore and Junior year. Despite not graduating, I never forgot my time there.I also attended Valley View, and center Jr. High. I was at Santa Susanna Elementary for grade school. I guess one advantage as an adult is I can be open, honest and candid about myself. I don't mind exposing my flaws, and weaknesses. Besides,I want to mention them before anyone else has a chance. (just kidding) My 2.5 years were a mixed bag at Simi High. In between all the "stuff", I can recall a couple of memorable events that were not funny at the time, but I can laugh at now. I went out for wrestling, swimming and football as a freshman. After freshman year,I did not return to sports because of poor grades. I learned later that bad grades occur, when you skip school. (what a revelation). There are a couple of memorable events I had as a freshman football player. I was determined to be the best player I could be. I practiced really hard and did all the physical things, I thought would help me succeed. Eventually the coaches noticed me and I was elevated to the first team and given the coveted white jersey, which says to everyone,I'm on the starting squad. Unfortunately, that lasted about a week 1 week. Everything was going great, until one practice, a coach asked me to run a down and out pattern. Well, I didn't know what he was talking about since "I DIDN'T READ THE PLAYS" I thought in my little brain that I was doing everything right, but guess what. If you don't know the plays you cant play. At that point,I was demoted to second,or third team. Another humiliating experience that put me over the edge was, I remember during a game, just before I quit, I was standing on the sidelines in my clean white uniform, Not playing. When the game ended, and we won. I was really happy, and for some reason, I dove in the grass that was covered with mud. It was raining, but I didn't care. On the way to the locker, s...Expand for more
ome guy who was watching the game yelled to me, "IS THAT THE ONLY WAY YOU COULD GET IN THE GAME" ? WOW, I couldn't wait to get to the locker room, and get out of that uniform. After that; I quit. What's ironic is, I have a son Brandon who was a star player in High School, and College. He played Division 1 football for Southern Illinois University, started 4 years, and received all kinds of awards. It was kind of cool living vicariously through my son. After sports,I associated with different groups around campus. I hung out with the people in band (even though I wasn't in band)I thought they were cool, and besides, most of them accepted me. I hung out with the folks behind the infamous "k" building, and these so called misfits were nice to me. Unfortunately, while hanging out with these different groups,my former football peers would walk around with their white and Red jerseys on before game day, and we kind of ignored each other, since I was an outcast, and I knew it, by the way, I harbor no resentment. Most of these guys were good kids. Of course I can say that now. I started lifting weights in High School, and Over the years,I have tried to stay in good shape. I was involved for a few years as a power lifter, and bodybuilder. I also got involved with Marshall arts. I still stay in good shape and try to live a healthy life style. although,I blew that on Saturday. My son got married... Hey,that's another story. If someone ask me. I'll tell them. I currently live 50 miles outside of St.Louis,Mo. I live in the country, working from my home for a Computer Company. It's a beautiful place, and I'm blessed to be here. Bottom line. It was all a learning experience. When my parent's moved to Santa Susanna in 1963 with a car load of kids. Life was not always easy. We were poor, and There were struggles, but I have been very blessed and fortunate since then. I would love to hear from anyone that attended Simi High. I think what's unique about people as they grow older is we never forget our childhood. I choose to remember the positive, and I will consider the negative a molding experience. Thanks, Jim Frick
