Jim's Story
Life
My gawd! Its been 54 years since I left Merritton High in St. Catharines and moved to Sir Adam Beck in London. And 49 years since I graduated from Ryerson! Sometimes it seems like yesterday
-- where have the years gone -- if you look at my "now" and "then" profile pictures -- I guess the years went where my hair went!
Believe it or not, after consistently screwing up languages, maths and sciences, I got wired on a data processing course and entered a 30+ year career in I.T. when I graduated Ryerson. I worked in the downtown Toronto construction zone when they put all those skyscrapers up. Every 6 months we had to find a new watering hole as they kept tearing buildings down.
In 1980 I got caught in one of the first downsizings as Canada Permanent Trust got absorbed by Canada Trust. I wound up back in London with 3M. 17 years later ... another downsize.
(While I was at 3M, I got my eyes straightened out. Check out the photos.)
I landed at CGI and worked on Bell's Y2k project ... 35,000 PC's replaced and reconfigured in 2 years ... best job I ever had. Then the Y2K work ended, CGI downsized and the "tech wreck" happened.
The I.T. job market went the way of the NASDAQ. Its been a scamble ever since. Even tried Primerica. Spent a year in a ...Expand for more
call centre (inbound only). Currently with Home Depot in Orillia.
I got married in 1970 and have two daughters now aged 41 and 38 (the "now" picture is from her wedding in 2016). I have a 22 year old and 10 year old grand-daughter.
I was known for cutting classes at Merritton. My youngest daughter's high school attendance was worse than mine. In May 2009 she received her MBA at SUNY (Oswego campus).
I was divorced in 87 but we're still good friends.
I re-married a lifelong family friend in 95. We divorced in 06. I was married to a narcissist for 10+ years. If you really know what narcissism is then you know where I've been. Its a personality disorder that is very destructive for those in a close relationship. I'm still on this side of the grass thanks to my real friends and family.
I lost everything of material value but I'm better off. Its taken several years but I've recovered from narcissistic domestic abuse and post traumatic stress. I'm now rebuilding my life at the cottage near Orillia ... where I've always wanted to live anyway.
My Merritton yearbook commented on my French skills with 'parlez-vous la ding-dong?' I always got it backwards. " ac tod ocitapmys ta hguogmij " If you get that backwards, you'll know how to reach me.
