Jim's Story

Life I guess I've had a lot of jobs. I worked as a maintenance slave at the Staten Island Mall, was briefly a messenger working with the dregs of humanity, and eventually became one of the managers of a comic book store while I was in college. I got a Master's in Cinema Studies (history, theory, etc.) but didn't think I could get a college teaching job with just that (I found out years later I could have). I stumbled into social services counseling and liked it. I worked for The Seamen's Society for Children and Families, a foster care agency, counseling families that abused or neglected their kids. I enjoyed the work and I think I got pretty good at it. I did that for five years until I realized that I really wanted to pursue my lifelong interest in working in the comic book industry. I found out about a job at DC Comics, home of Batman, Superman, and some other, more eclectic types of comics. I got hired and worked on the eclectic stuff. I was an assistant editor and eventually editor of a line of books of non-fiction in comics form. We also did a line of mystery graphic novels which included Road to Perdition (made into a film with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman). The work was great but the environment was akin to working for Stalin, so after six years I left. Believe it or not, working with abusive families was infinitely less stressful than working for a comics company fulla rubes. Go figure. Right now, I teach comics classes at The School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, write comics freelance, and have a teeny, tiny art-comics publishing company. I'm also i...Expand for more
nvolved with some Asian film festivals around the city. I like doing all this stuff alot, so that makes me happy. I struggle with a chronic illness that affects my sleep and my energy levels. It's a chronic fungal infection that's centered in my sinuses, though it's also systemic. I deal with a lot of fatigue and long bouts of sleep where I can't wake up for sometimes 18 hours or more. It - in a word - sucks. It's prevented me from working full time for the last four years. I have terrible side effects from the anti-fungal drugs, otherwise they would have been able to knock it out years ago. I go to Doctors a lot and we're still working on it. Oy! I've had relationships over the years but haven't hooked up with anyone for the long haul, much to my chagrin. Right now, I'm this close to becoming the male version of Charlotte on Sex and the City, practically walking around with a woman-sized net labeled "Have kids with me!" My Mom and Dad have been retired for a while (the Old Man is turning 80 this year!) and are in pretty good health. My brother recently got married and lives in St. Paul, MN. My sister is a graphic designer and video artist and lives in the Village with her boyfriend of 12 years. I live in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn and I love it. I frequent coffee houses, movie theaters, and various porn shops. I look like I'm in my late 20s (I'm 41) or so I'm told (often applaud when I hear it). I have a lot of good friends and have recently been more in touch with some really dear friends from high school/college era. It's been great. And you?
