Jim's Story
Dover High cheerleader in Fall of '45. Joined Army in Feb '46 and served in Germany and Austria thru most of '46 and '47. Vocalist at Leonard's Grill in '48/'49, then in Omaha in '48 where I was also breakfast cook in large cafeteria. Joined Air Force in 1950 at start of Korean War, was in telecommunications at Langley AFB, Va. Went to South Korea Jan '55 and became program director and chief announcer for armed forces radio stations Comet and Mercury at Osan and Kunsan.air bases. Went to Lockbourne AFB in Columbus OH in early '56 and joined public affairs team, including being loaned to WTVN-TV for a year to author 8 half-hour documentary films broadcast in 1957 by WTVN-TV. Then became base newspaper editor and also worked nights as deejay for WTVN Radio for 6 years until assigned to Hawaii base public affairs..Traveled with PACAF commander to Australia as speech writer and advance man. nd overseas to Japan, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, Australia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Thailand to write feature articles about AF people for monthly 4-color magazine. Retired from active duty in 1969 with 20+plus years military service. In 1977, rejoined Airman as civil service managing editor, before magazine moved from DC to San Antonio TX. Retired as executive editor in late 1989 and moved back to Dover/Phila areas. Now reside with wife, Esther, in Bedford, Va. We have 8 children; raised nine, Retirement activities focus on geneaological research. BONUSES: Met wife-to-be in Omaha, married in Cheyenne in Sept 1950. Spent a week on a Navy sub (USS Ray) as guest communications trainer during sea duties in Atlantic in 1954. Flew inside and outside loops, rolls and hammerhead stalls in aerobatic civilian airplane while researching for story on Virginia-based Flying Air Force performances in Culpeper area in 1978. Wrote 65 major articles/features for Airman and AF Historian magazines. Had tons of fun during all these various assignments. Still married in May 2016.
