James's Story
Moved from Tahoe, in August of 1963, to Fremont for my senior year of high school. Instant culture shock, graduated and went off to Foothill College. Quit school to work; got Drafted! Able to join the Air Force; sent to Eglin AFB, Florida, got orders to Viet Nam-orders were resended (brother was sent to Soc Trang, Viet Nam) I went to Naha AB, Okinawa. From Okinawa, the Air Force sent me to Beale AFB, California where I was discharged. Went back to school at Ohlone College, after graduation I worked for the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller Trainee. Realized that I was not air traffic control materal, I went to work for a Structural Connector manufacturer, where I served in a number of jobs, my last job was as a District Sales Manager. I got married to a wonderful gal who has put up with me for 38 years (2010). I have changed my civilian career 3 times; I retired from civilian work in 2008. Transportation Specialist. In 2003, 94 members of my squadron were activated for a year. I was one of them; in August of 2003, I was deployed to Manas AB, Kyrgyzstan, I was assigned to the Air Terminal Operations Center as an Imformation Controller. Our team was responsible for all inbound/outbound aircraft passengers and cargo. I retired from the Air Force in 2006. My wife, Karen, and I have 2 sons; we also have 1 grandson. My wife still works as a Special Education teacher and I volunteer in her school 2 to 3 times a week. We enjoy spending time with our extended family, going to regional theater, traveling by car, trains, and cruise ships. We have a special "date night" that we have enjoyed for the last 20 years; Karen and I, at least once a month, go out to dinner and then enjoy a double feature at the Stanford Theater in Palo Alto. The theater shows classic movies from the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. We are still residing in Fremont.
