Jim's Story
Life
College, grad school, several jobs. Married and divorced, no kids. I've lived in Texas, Connecticut, Colorado, back in Southern California, and lived most recently in Minnesota. Now that I'm retired, I live in a motorhome RV and travel around the country.
School
My memories of high school are of sunny days, all the nice new classrooms in the new wings, and the old classrooms on Ramon Road with their big windows to look out.
The big issues were chewing gum, smoking in the bathroom, and whether the Student Dress Code (which allowed Bermuda shorts on Fridays) should allow boys to wear shirts without tucking them into their trousers.
We knew next to nothing about the Great Depression, World War II or the Korean War, and we had no clue that the Cuban Missile Crisis and Viet Nam would be coming up real soon. Yeah, there were atom bomb tests in Nevada, the Russians, the Cold War, the Iron Curtain, but somehow they seemed pretty far removed from life in Palm Sprin...Expand for more

Memories of... Rock'n'Roll. MacBeth. Writing an autobiography. Mr. Sussman. Miss Cote. Dr. Greeley, Dr. Webster, Dr. Sellery. Mr. Scholl. Mr. Watt. Mr. McCarthy. Sun, sand, palm trees, and, always, that gorgeous Mt. San Jacinto towering in the west.
We went to school in a little desert paradise!
College
My freshman year, my roommate in the dorm was from New York. What were they thinking? "Here's a freshman from Southern California... Let's put him in the same room with this freshman from New York." It was not a good fit.
I studied hard. He partied a lot. The guys in the next room played bridge every day instead of studying, and flunked out. Somehow, I kept on studying hard and stuck it out.
It turned out that freshman year was the hardest one, the remaining years were just plain hard. At the end of four years, I graduated with a bachelor's degree in physics.
