Jim's Story

I was impressed with the format Pat Ferry used for his story and decided to do one somewhat similar. I was born in Adams, a small town in Western MA. After I was born, my family moved to Pittsfield, a small city south of Adams. I attended grade school there, K - 6. Pittsfield is located in the Bershire Mountains, so we had plenty of snow in the winter. There were also lots of lakes and streams for trout fishing. My grandfather lived in the Bronx and also had a summer house in Poquott. So, as a young kid, we spent our summers on Long Island. I loved the beach and water. Grandpop had a boat and I went fishing with him as far back as I can remember. A few years after my grandfather passed away, we moved from MA to Poquott in 1960. I began junior high school at Setauket. I remember the teachers Pat Ferry mentioned in his story. It was a unique time to be growing up on Long Island, the area was changing so rapidly, farm fields were disappearing and housing developments springing up. New kids were coming into school from NYC all the time. At that time Setauket didn't have a high school, so we went to Port Jeff. As I remember, a lot of surrounding school districts sent there students to Port Jefferson. For that reason, the class years were fairly large. ng at home and working part time. After Farmingdaile, I transferred to Buffalo and receieved my 4 year degree. Ended up staying in Western NY for almost twenty years. After graduation, worked at Ford Motor Co. in Buffalo for 2 years. Left Ford and worked for Morton Salt for almost 15 years out in Wyoming County, 50 miles east and a little south from Buffalo. Having a fear of being stuck in the snow belt for the rest of our lives, we moved to North Eastern PA in the late 80's. I worked at the corporate office of a Portland Cement Company in the Lehigh Valley. After a couple of years, I was transferred to one of the companies cement plants in Western PA. I've been out here since 1992 and retirement isn't that far away. After reading peoples messages on the bulletin boards, I have many fond memories of Long Island as well. I miss living near the water, doing all the neat water related stuff like fishing, digging clams and of course, partying. Partying at the cove was mentioned, the cove was across the harbor from our house. As a kid, we also referred to the cove as the "hole". Having those good memories, I like to say, "you can take the kid out of Long Island, but you can't take the Long Island out of the kid". Anyway, enough rambling for now, hope some of you find this interesting. Thanks for taking the time to read. Jim Litter
