Jim's Story
Life
Started at Buchser HS, parents moved. Went to Leigh HS. Parents moved again. Went to Saratoga HS. Graduated from SHS then went to San Jose State on a wrestling scholarship. Graduated in 1975 and got married the same year to the former Patty Hessdorfer - Willow Glen, Class of '73. (Still the love of my life -- even after 48 years of marriage!) Made an attempt for the 1976 Olympics but just missed out, retired from wrestling and went full-throttle into job and surfing. After nine years of marriage Patty and I had our first kid, son James II. 15 months later had daughter Lana (oops! I wonder what caused that?!!!) Worked in ad agencies and on the client side for 30 years. Got "de-sized" in the high tech down turn 2002, did Day Trading which was profitable but pretty stressful so got back into corporate communications senior management.. Was stranded in Moscow summer of 2006 and had a "revelation"! I was tired of making Silicon Valley CEOs gazillions of dollars. Really enjoyed coaching so I became a teacher walking away from the big bucks (Patty had been teaching since 1978 and I saw what an impact she made on kids and I wanted to do the same.) Taught up in Pescadero for the my first year then began teaching English and Creative Writing at Pajaro Valley High School in Watsonville (Mr. Heagarty is probably having heart failure!) as well as being the Advisor for both the Creative Writing Club and the Surf/Eco Club. I was also the head wrestling coach.

ld, then completed her certification as a massage therapist and then had a baby girl, Lilyana, in July '08! (I've looked like a Grandpa for many years but now I'm actually one!) Dog Buddy is my buddy along with the cat, Fiona who loves me when she wants food.
More stuff: Did surf contests all over the world for 15 years, was captain of 60s surf legend Greg Noll's surf team for ten years, wrote for Surfer Magazine for ten years and a bunch of other surf pubs. Was on the Board of Directors of Surfrider Foundation for 4 years helping to make the planet a better and safer place. In 1997 got back into wrestling and won the World Championships in 2002, 3rd in 2006 and was in the top 5 in the world five times and never placed lower than tenth; won 7 US National titles, 18 times top 3 in the US. I've since retired from wrestling for good! In 1998 was a charter inductee into the Ironman Surfing/Wrestling Hall of Fame.
More stuff: Still surfing. Still playing guitar. I scored a '79 MGB in 2005 and have been reacquainting myself with my British/Scottish heritage ! Patty and I retired from teaching in June 2022 and have been enjoying our life together with no work worries. Usually start the day with me getting a quick surf while Patty gets a walk in. We take the ‘51 Ford woody wagon to the beach and pretend we’re Frankie and Annette! Life is fun and I have no complaints.
