Jim's Story
Life-long musician. After studying music composition at Pomona College, worked as pianist/vocalist in a variety of styles (rock, blues, jazz, R&B, salsa, cumbia, etc.). Performed with Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall, Maria Muldaur, Delbert McClinton, Bo Diddley, Dallas Taylor, "Gatemouth" Brown, Luther allison, and Bobby "Blue" Bland, as well as Phoenix legends Francine Reed and Hans Olson. Lived and gigged in Seattle, Santa Barbara, and Flagstaff before doing the grad school thing. Received M.M. in Conducting at ASU (1991). Taught HS music in Tempe and on the Mexican border before moving to Chicago (1994) to marry. Now on music faculty at Triton College, and at The Latin School of Chicago. I love my work. Teaching responsibilities have taken me throughout Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Ireland is a favorite place. Son Bennet (16) loves drawing, baseball, camping and biking with dad, computers and video games. When not teaching or rehabbing our 110-year-o...Expand for more
ld farmhouse in Oak Park (gee, it was fun for the first year or so), I perform in and around Chicago with my band The Hurtin Kind, and just completed a new CD (it can be found on ReverbNation). Lately I've enjoyed tutoring young musicians at The School of Rock.
I'm grateful for the gift of music and for having the opportunity to make my passion be my life's work. I feel blessed that my life has been eventful, interesting, rewarding, and fun; and that it's not over yet.
Favorite things in life: family, comida mexicana, teaching, travel, March Madness, good coffee, making music with friends, listening to great music (Beatles, Beethoven, Los Lobos, James Taylor, Miles Davis, Bonnie Raitt, Poncho Sanchez, Morten Lauridsen, Joni Mitchell), walking through Grant Park (Chicago lakefront), the natural beauty of AZ, reading, woodworking, and adventure.
Least favorite things: traffic, the designated hitter rule, SUVs, lazy ignorance, bad coffee, and Citizens United.
