Jim's Story
You may not remember me because I was very shy. I attended OPRFHS only as a junior and senior year (1963-1965) after attending Marmion Military Academy as a freshman and sophomore (1961-1963). I ran the mile on the track team my junior year and wrestling team as a junior and senior.
In 1965 I would have voted myself to the list of graduates least likely to succeed. I grossly underestimated the tenacious drive hidden inside. My life has been an adventurous roller-coaster ride and an international all-you-can-eat-smorgasbord. Full of ups and downs and I tried it all. I transformed myself from an insecure introvert to type A successful can-do go-getter. I did it ALL. I retired on December 24, 2000, as a California RN, BSN, PHN..
1970 BS in Business Education from Southern Illinois University. I did not enjoy trying to teach brats that had zero interest in learning so that lasted but a few months.
1993 BSN (nursing science) from Florida Atlantic University. Yes, Jim actually became a registered nurse / public health nurse. Graduated in the top quarter of my class. 180 degrees different from my Marmion and OPRFHS experiences.
March 1993, just before graduating from FAU I changed my last name from Maes to Van Eyck because Van Eyck is the correct bloodline name. The short story is my father's father, Mr. Van Eyck, who died when my father was two years old. Dad's surname was Van Eyck. Dad's mother married Mr. Maes. At age seven dad was adopted which, of course, changed his surname from Van Eyck to Maes. I changed to the correct bloodline name. I always loved the surname Van Eyck.
I experienced the ups and downs by owning several businesses: A collection agency, automobile body shop, carpet cleaning business, and various real estate experiences. I am a slow learner as it took 30 years (after buying and selling abou...Expand for more
t 40 houses) for me to learn that "flipping" houses is a hard way to make a little bit of money.
LESSON: If you insist on investing in real estate own only invest in commercial real estate and/or good mutual funds. I can PROVE that over the past fifty years good mutual funds have been a FAR better investment than real estate, of course, there are a few exceptions.
I was nearly broke in 1988 (one of my downs) and I retired a millionaire December 24, 2000. Nice Merry Christmas present to me.
I lived in greater San Diego 13 years, Lake Havasu City, AZ 3 years, and FL 1988-1993 and 2004 to the present. with a brief hiatus 2009-2011 when I lived at Royale Tagaytay Estates, Luzon, Philippines.
I am in great health and about 145 pounds. ALL of my teeth are original equipment. No store-bought teeth.
Politically I am to the right of the Tea Party. I think liberals are ignorant, lazy, uninformed, misinformed, and/or otherwise have some kind of mental or social defect or disorder. I am quite judgmental. I have no respect for liberals-NONE!! I am not politically correct. I HATE what America has become and see absolutely NO reason to be optimistic about America's future. President Donald J. Trump gave us 4 of hope but the demographic trend is pessimistic. I constantly tell my two grandsons to get vasectomies.
The good news about politically correct "snowflakes" is a boy in high school today is now he can just say "I feel like a girl" and he can then go shower with the girls. Too bad we did not have that in 1965. If you are a liberal please wise up and check out the writings of Dennis Prager. Dennis is a very wise oracle. If you have a brain he will prove the folly of your liberal and politically correct ignorance.
What say you?
If you knew me I would love to hear from you if you are a conservative. If you are a liberal not so much.
