Jim's Story

Life After high school: 1991 thru 1997 - Attended UNLV at first for a teaching degree that quickly morphed into a BS in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Math, joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity (Kappa Alpha chapter), and worked semi-fulltime at a gas/service station. 1997 thru 1999 - Lived/worked in Massachusetts (off the Red line) and explored the east coast 1999 - Moved to Tucson, AZ via a work transfer and to be closer to familiar surroundings 2000 thru 2003 - Attended classes at UofA part time while working full time 2003 - Met my future wife (Lia) on the mall of the UofA campus. She was on campus working towards finishing her PhD in Educational Psychology and I was walking Scrappy (dogs are great chick magnets). 2005 - Ran my first marathon in January at the Rock n' Roll Marathon race in Phoenix. Also proposed to my girlfriend (Lia) right before running the race (it was 5am and she was half asleep). Ended up running the 26.2 miles in a total time of 3 hours and 56 minutes (a 9 minute mile average pace), which meet my main goal of running it under 4 hours. Also, competed in my first triathlon (in Mexico) in the Fall where it was inbetween a sprint and Olympic sized race. 2006 - Currently training for the Las Vegas Half Marathon that's in December (I don't have the time to train for the full right now). 2007 - We thought that remodeling our 1930's kitchen would be a "fun" experience, so we just gutted it, even removed a wall, and started building it up from scratch. So much much fun ... it really was a great learning experience (just like hitting yourself with a hammer!), but I...Expand for more
don't think I would attempt such a big project like this again on my own (in only my spare time). It took us around 6 months to complete, but we were very very happy with the end result ... just not so happy during the remodel for the inconvenience of not having a working kitchen or trying to figure out how to fix stuff that we didn't anticipate having to fix. 2008 - Started down the baby track where our daughter (Avery) was born in the summertime (and I have to give props to Lia, or women in general, for going thru the whole pregnancy thing). And so far (at around 2 months old) she's been just great and not too fussy. It's funny, but I have no idea where all my time goes anymore. And as a plus, she's very very talented (even at 2 months) where she started a blog all on her own ... check it out ... well, it looks like you can't post websites on here, but if you're interested, it's on google's blogspot under her name (averyclaire). College 1997 - Graduated UNLV with a BS in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Math. From 2000-2003, was enrolled in the EE graduate program at UofA for a Masters (chose to stop halfway, after 5 classes, to focus more on work and home life). 2006 (current) - Considering enrolling into an MBA program. Workplace 1997 - Recruited by Raytheon Missile Systems (from their Massachusetts location) right out of college to work on signal processing algorithms for missile defense programs (eg "rocket science" type work) 1999-2008(present) - Transferred to Raytheon's Tucson, AZ location and continue to work on signal processing algorithms for missile defense programs
