James's Story

Life Hasn't life been grand for us? We've all had our ups and downs, good times and bad, including the loss of loved ones. Hopefully the joys have offset the sorrows. All in all, life has been good to me. After getting turned down by the military for Viet Nam, I had two careers - first as a machinist for 10 years and then after going back to finish a bachelor's degree at UCD, 25 years as a real estate appraiser in eminent domain with CDOT. I worked part-time in retirement last year (2012) reviewing appraisals for RTD in their FasTracks light-rail program. I discovered Mike Barnes ("Barney") worked there! Now I work part time making phone calls from home for the Census Bureau, in Quality Control. Sounds fancier than it is, but it helps financially.. I was married 20 years to one woman, 12 of them happily. I was one of those "older dads." It felt odd sometimes at PTA meetings where everyone else was a lot younger. <g> Sometimes I wondered if I had enough energy for a teenager while in my 50's! We managed, though. My son Alden is 41 and graduated from UCD in film production. He tried to start a local company doing commercial training films with a partner, but then the economy went south. He now gets by driving limos part-time for a Denver firm. He keeps plugging away on creating an online video game, and looking for better work. My daughter Sarah squeaked by in high school, but redeemed herself by graduating magna cum laude from Metro State in December of 2011. She applied 58 times for teaching jobs, and finally got one teaching at Eagle Ridge Academy - in Brighton, of all places! She's engaged to be married in June of 2013. As a teenager, she recorded a demo CD in San Francisco, singing pop and country songs. Unfortunately all that money spent went nowhere, but it did help her mature a lot. That was surely more important. My major hobby has been genealogy. After yea...Expand for more
rs of research with a cousin, we finally published a genealogy of our early Rogers family on Lulu.com. I was once editor of the Colorado Genealogical Society newsletter for two years, and was once their vice-president. For eight years I volunteered for 2 hours a week reading for the blind and dyslexic at Learning Ally. I help read parts of textbooks primarily. It's all computerized, and the kids/clients can download a chapter at a time. It's satisfying stuff. My yard has several raised beds for vegetable gardening and some young fruit trees. I also have a few rabbits in the garage along with a couple quail. If the economy crashes, at least we'll have a little protein to go with the summertime veggies. I used to enjoy home fix-up, but after decades of being a landlord, that has gotten old and so have I. My arthritic knee slows me down some. Can't complain, though, and it wouldn't do any good even if I did. Life could be far worse. The possibility of some macular degeneration scares me. It's the slow kind, though. I have traveled a bit overseas, and would like to do more before I lose more of my health. I've traded visits with cousins in Germany, and would like to spend more time there "im Heimatland." I even dragged my (then) kids to Europe and showed them Utah Beach, where my Dad went ashore in landing craft at Normandy. I had a steady girlfriend Barbara who, with her 18 y.o. son, lived with me. She'd won a couple trips on the Internet this past year, including one to the Rock Concert at Coachella in CA. We got high-fived for being the oldsters there! Lots of eye-candy there, what with all the 20-somethings running around. That was a kick. Just got back from Florida, where I'd never been before. Enough for now. You all take care and be well. Even though I've not been the most social person, I think about a lot of you and wish you all the best. - "Bug" Rogers (Feb 2013)
