Jim's Story

In 1968 after my sister died of cancer I joined the Air Force and stayed for 24 years. After basic training and electronic schools I was stationed in Rome...NY not Italy. I spent about 9 months there and then off to Tucson Arizona for some more training for 3 months and off to balmy Southeast Asia for a fun filled 2 years, 1970 to 1972. I did get to work on the first Laser guided bomb equipped aircraft, that was interesting. After 2 years in hot and humid SEA the Air Force felt I needed some dry heat so I was sent back to Tucson from 1972 to 1974 with a few side trips back to Asia. This let me work on the U-2 spy aircraft and the first C-130 aircraft carrying drone spy aircraft whose mission it was to fly over North Vietnam. So then I was sent back to Southeast Asian again, oh joy. When I got back to Tucson in December 1973 they sent me to the cold northeast for a 4 year tour in Plattsburg NY starting in January 1974 until November 1977 working on aircraft out in the sub zero weather. From November 1977 to November of 1980 I was stationed in Germany and enjoyed that a lot. However I didn't enjoy the multiple trips to Spain Turkey and Iran. So from the cold of Germany and the heat of the Deserts in Turkey, Spain and Iran. They felt I needed to go back to the States and also keep me in the heat. So of course I got stationed in the Mojave desert in California from November 1980 to July of 1982 with a few side trips to Korea and other lovely places like Las Vegas. Then in July of 1982 I was se...Expand for more
nt to the Presidential Organization at Andrews Air Force Base for 10 years where I stayed until 1992 retiring November 30th of 1992. Finally, I was free to be stable in one place and get a degree in electrical Engineering which I finished in 1995. I worked in Binghamton on semiconductor lasers and laser test equipment from 1995 until 2001 when I was offered a job in Tuscon, seems there is a theme with this Tucson always showing up huh. Well from December of 2001 until May of 2005 I worked in Tucson doing R&D on semiconductor lasers, they basically paid me to have fun but with the company being sold 3 times while I worked there the politics of the job drove me crazy so I decided to retire in May of 2005. We moved from Tucson to Greenville SC for supposedly our retirement home. However we hated it there and sold the house and You guessed it moved back to Arizona. This time we decided to live in a small town so we moved to a town called Arizona City halfway between Tucson (there's that name again) and Phoenix and we are now living the lazy life of a retired couple, golf when we want, go to casinos when we want and in general just slow down and smell the cacti. Oh I forgot a few things like heart attacks. I must be a slow learner, I am up to #8 in heart attacks. I had 3 in 1988 and a 3 vessel bypass, 1 in 1989, 1 in 1999 & stents, 1 each in the years of 2003 and 2004, I had stents again in 2006 and my last heart attack I hope anyway in 2008. So that's what I have been doing for the last 41 years
