Jim's Story
Life
Life Biography - WOW - Does anyone actually know where to start with this one??
I mean EVERYONE has a story to tell !
Hmmm, I guess I will tell mine.
After ending my long and promising high school career (and having many fumbles with the law) I decided I needed to go into the military. I will leave both those stories for the School section and the Military section. :-)
Life Biography: (short version)
After my military stint in 1972 I went to work for a computer firm. During a two-week layoff in 1975 I was involved in a head on collision between a station wagon and a motorcycle. Naturally - I was on the motorcycle. (We can talk about the near death some other time). The end result was that I nearly lost both legs to amputation, but since I was not supposed to live longer than a few days the doctors simply patched me up as good as possible and called my family together. Well, I lived just a smidgeon longer than expected and was then told I would never walk again, but hey yer lucky to be alive.
After spending 4 months in full traction, 6 months in a body cast, two years in steel reinforced long legged casts and 3 more years with steel braces on both legs and two canes to steady me, over the next 15+ years I learned how to walk again. Today I walk well enough to fool anyone. I have plenty of pain, but nothing so great as to hold me down. :-)
Another nasty present from the accident is that I have a form of amnesia. It was supposed to only be a short-term thing (according to the doctors), but they were wrong about me dying and about me never walking again. I guess it is no surprise they are wrong about this too. When they told me this was possible I sort of smirked because at the time I thought I remembered everything from the present all the way back to early infancy. But in the early 80's (5+ years later) I entered a drug store and was greeted by a lady that knew me on sight, by name, and said we used to hang around together. I had no clue who she was. Not by sight, not by name, and not by names she tossed at me of other people we chummed with, and to this day it saddens me that I still do not remember her or any of the others she mentioned. She seemed like a nice person. I guess I find it sort of apropo that I recall being a "stinker" as a youngster and all that entails, but I don't recall some of the good things. Hell, who knows - maybe there weren't any! But still, the lady seemed like a nice person and I regret not remembering her or the others. I guess what I am saying is that if we should meet, and I don't remember you, by all means blame it on age or anything else you want. It is certainly unintentional, and most likely related to a 1975 head on collision.
Believe me when I say I wish I could pick and chose those things I remember and those things I could forget. Ummm, er, scratch that. I just realized that if I forgot all the things I'd prefer not to remember that I would likely end up with a blank disk here - if ya know what I mean.. :-)
Today is 2/12/04. I am about three weeks away from opening my first brick and mortar business. I am opening a Pizzeria at 6 mile and Farmington Road. For those of you still living in the area - come in and say hi. I will be located right next door to Baskin Robbins. Say the magic word and win a free pizza! :-)
The Pizzeria name is "Jaey Ess Muricun." Strange Name - Great Pizza.... Wish me luck... :-)
School
Hmmm, well - my long and promising high school career lasted a whole two weeks (if that) in the 9th grade. I was not a very studious person in those years and my high school days ended with a fistfight with my science teacher in the hallway at Clarenceville HS.
The past:
To the science teacher whose name I don't recall. You were right - I was wrong - I apologize.
The present:
While disabled I began a hobby in computers the first day they came out for home use. Eventually I taught myself to program these new fangdangled things in several different computer languages. I also became the person to come to in my area for computer upgrades and repairs. In 1994 I enrolled in Schoolcraft College with a major in computer systems.
I then went to work for Archway Marketing Services as the companies sole Computer Tech for 400 users. I am presently certified A+, MCP and CNA. For the past two years I was the companies Network Administrator, as well as training and mentoring other Computer Techs to take my place while I concentrated on the Networking aspects of the company.

I wrote to the State of Michigan and voluntarily removed myself from Social Security Disability.
(You have absolutely no idea how degrading it is to some people to know they need to rely on such a thing and how much of a security blanket it creates.)

Military
After ending my long and promising high school career I decided I needed to go into the military. But because of my lawless fumbles the military could not touch me with a ten-foot pole. In fact, they could never touch me. But I was eager to get away from the "fumbles" and with that in mind the enlistment officer found a little used option of Volunteering for the Draft. What I did not know was that the military is not allowed to give individuals who had fumbled with the law a gun. The end result was that since I was now in the military and the military could not accept me in this manner. They "corrected" my records by actually ripping up my fumbles. Thereby leaving me with no fumbles and the military with a new, and legal, recruit. :-)
While in the military I did the same thing everyone else did except when they asked me for my preferred duty assignment I chose Vietnam and Hawaii. I had my reasons. One was that I desperately needed to grow up, and second I needed to cure the fumbles. Besides, I doubt I was the brightest bulb back then.
In Vietnam I was just a normal "grunt' assigned to a S&D unit (Search and Destroy). We lived in the jungle 24/7 and were supplied fresh food and water by helicopter every 2-3 weeks. Every other month we walked into a secured area for a 3 day R&R before flying into another area to start over. As I said, we stayed in the jungle 24/7 and as such at night time we needed to secure and mark out our perimeter then set up shifts for guard duty. After about a month or so of guard duty every night I made a deal with everyone else in my platoon to take over Pointman duties permanently. Let me explain Pointman. The Pointman is the guy who walks in front of everyone guiding the rest of the platoon, or company, from point A to point B looking out for booby traps, ambushes, and in the case of Vietnam where we never use trails; he also makes the new trail through the jungle underbrush. Why did I do this? I was young and invincible. But I had other important reasons on my mind. One of those I already mentioned. I no longer had to perform guard duty at night. Hell - I got to sleep ALL NIGHT LONG! :-) Because nobody wanted a tired Pointman walking them through the jungle. And what about those times when we received fresh supplies by helicopter every 2-3 weeks? Well, not only did we get fresh water and rations, but we also got a fresh change of boots and clothing - AND - we got HOT food served to us from the helicopter - and guess who got to choose from the fresh clothing first or go through the line for the HOT food first? MEeeeeee !! I may not have been the brightest bulb back then, but I got a LOT of fumbles erased, no guard duty, and I got HOT food and clean clothes first!
As humorous as that may be, one may not understand why a person would do something so dangerous for seemingly so little. But there were several things going on here. One (as I said) I was young and immortal, and two - it was the little things that really counted over there and the price was never an issue. Being Pointman only lasted a little more than 6 months. After being in the jungle for about 8 months I became "displeased" with certain things I had seen and been subjected to that I re-enlisted to get out of the field. I re-enlisted as a Helicopter Door-Gunner (remember that brightest bulb thing?) and I flew in a UH-1 (Huey) for a month then stayed on the ground as a helicopter repairman for the remainder of my term. Though I never really worked on a single helicopter. Instead, for my final two months I drove a jeep for my company captain.
After Vietnam I was stationed in Savannah, GA for a year, then I went to Germany for 17 months as an aircraft mechanic
Now for the short story. I fumbled with the law, I needed to grow up. I joined the army. I no longer fumble with the law. I got wiser - But I never grew up... :-) Oh yeah, I got my GED while in the service as well.
