Jim's Story

Life Living with wife (a University of Detroit grad, too) in small condo in Sarasota FL. Three children, 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grand in Battle Creek. 34-year newspaper writing/editing career: small papers in Garden City, Belleville, Ferndale, Rockford, Niles, followed by 28 years at the Battle Creek daily as education reporter, then copy editor (including TV editor, features editor, Sunday editor, wire editor). Very active in Barbershop Harmony Society, especially PR and marketing, from the local through to the international level, from 1984-2002. Retired early, in 1998. Wife retired as special-education teacher aide in June 2001. House rebuilt and sold after house fire in Nov. 2001; moved to Sarasota FL in May 2002 to be near parents. Dad died in April 2003 after strokes; mom died Marcy 2015 at age 98. After faith got me through crises, got more active in church and local and state pro-life activities, including some state lobbying and local behind-the-scenes political activity. Knights of Columbus 4th Degree member. Right to Life chapter president since 2005 and state board member; active with and advisor to diocesan Respect Life office, organizer and coordinator of weekly prayer vigil and sidewalk counseling outside Planned Parenthood abortion mill (group ...Expand for more
has saved 130 babies from abortion); pro-life activist before school, city and county boards; network with other area and state pro-life groups and churches. Involved with computers for several years, including newsletter publishing and operating e-mail lists, including one Barbershop Harmony list and 3 pro-life lists reaching +600. Surveyed political candidates on life-related issues, sent results to 1,000 voters. Lung cancer in 2007; thought it was cured but it metastasized to hip in 2012; in remission in 2014. -- Contact: jimstyer at Comcast dot net Workplace Weekly newspaper editor in Garden City for 6 weeks, Ferndale for 2 years, Rockford for 2 years. Reporter for Niles daily for 2 years. Then settled in for 28 years at Battle Creek daily: education writer for 10 years, with several awards; then copy editor for remainder, variously as feature editor, Sunday editor, TV magazine editor, wire editor. Newspaper Guild union activist in Niles and for a while in Battle Creek. Military 6 years National Guard. Basic at Fort Knox; AIT at Fort Gordon GA, communications and cryptography. Based in Detroit, then Greenville, then near Niles. Called back to Detroit during 1967 riots; stayed overnight at armory, but then transferred to "hold the fort" in Greenville.
