Jim Coleman:

CLASS OF 1962
Phoenix, AZ

Jim's Story

Currently I am President of the Piano Technicians Guild (ptg.org), an organization for technicians and others interested in pianos...teachers, manufacturers, etc. I have been around pianos my whole life. In the 2nd grade my father began showing me how the action of a piano works. By the time II turned 15 he started teaching me how to tune pianos. After graduating from Carl Hayden in '62 I was tuning for a few friends, some churches and even CHHS. At the age of 19 I was the piano technician for the Baldwin dealer in Phoenix. I also began working again with my father while building my own private clientele. In July 1966 I moved to Indiana to become the Quality Control Engineer in the piano division of the C.G Conn company. In 1969 I returned to Phoenix and rebuilt my private bisiness. In 1975 I joined the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) and soon became a Craftsman (now called a Registered Piano Tech...Expand for more
nician) member. I was elected to the office of Western Region Vice President of PTG in 1991, served as Secretary/Treasurer in 1994-1996 and again in 2006-2009, became Vice President of PTG in 2009, and was elected President this past July, 2011. During the 1980's recession, I took the opportunity to become the piano tech for Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania. After five years one of our daughters developed health issues so we returned to Arizona in 1989 and I once again began to rebuild a private clientele. After selling my businesses in the valley (hoping to retire!) we moved to Globe, AZ for 7 years, then on to Tennessee where I am currently the piano technician for the University of Tennessee. My wife is Laura and be have 10 children between us (6 of mine and 4 of hers), I have at this point in time 19 grand children with one more in the 'oven', and 3 great grandchildren.
