Jim's Story

As a teen in high school I actually believed I was a heroic Ninja Warrior, but later found out it was just something I ate. Out of high school I played a year of football at Portland State University, but decided that path only provided a directionless, dead-end future. So, I joined the Navy, sure that it would provide me with a directional dead-end future. After the Navy, I took my high-school GPA of 1.59 and went to Portland Community College, and then to Portland State. I graduated from Portland State in 1984 with a Business Administration degree, and a 3.64 GPA. It's amazing! I found that the simple act of staying awake in class vastly improves ones chances of getting a fair grade - well, that and my share of sociology, PE, and business classes. Fresh out of Portland State I took a job as a Computer Instructor at Trend Business College. Yup, I really used all those business courses there. While working at Trend an old Navy acquaintance tracked me down and asked if I would like to work for the Navy as a Civilian Training Specialist. The travel was good, the money was good, and I was promised that NO ONE WOULD BE SHOOTING AT ME. While working for the Navy I went back to school and graduated from Chapman University with a Masters...Expand for more
in Human Resource Management. I also have a law degree and started working on a doctorate in education (training and development). After 13 years with the Navy, the best opportunity ever fell into my lap. It was a chance to work for the US Park Service as an Information System Specialist. I started at the Petrified Forest National Park, and managed to work in several parks over a 10 year career. Working for the Park Service was the best job I ever had, but as I started to get closer to retirement I realized that I needed to up my GS rating to get a better retirement package. I did just that by taking a job at the US Fish & Wildlife Service in Portland, Oregon. I have had to state this many, many times. When people found out that I worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service they naturally assumed that I was a wildlife specialist. I was actually a computer geek and barely knew the difference between a duck and a dog, other than one was man's best friend, and the other always pissed off Bugs Bunny. Anyway, that's where I retired from. Since I've retired my basic job is to go into a store, like Walmart, and continually hum the theme from the Batman TV show until it gets so annoying that they throw me out. It's worked out great so far.
