Jim's Story
"It's been a long, strange trip." (Jerry Garcia, The Grateful Dead) But, a pretty good one . . . a loving family, great friends, many special memories and only a few regrets.
My wonderful wife, Nancy and I have been married since 1973. She puts up with a lot (yes, I'm high maintenance) and she will tell you she does everything for me (and she does). We have two great daughters, four wonderful grandchildren, a GREAT granddaughter and one very cool cat.
During high school and the first few years of college, I worked a great first job at the Glendora Country Club with my high school pals, Ray Cloutman (still my best friend since the 5th grade), Dick Muench (Thanks for the job Dick!) and Bob Springston. After that, Steve Tribble helped me to get a job at the Ralphs Grocery Store in Glendora which would change my life (Thanks Steve!). I spent 25 years "growing up" in the Ralphs organization, then 5 years at a natural foods chain, called Wild Oats Markets based in Boulder, Colorado and finally returning to Southern California to work for Stater Bros. Markets,...Expand for more
where I retired in 2013.
My basketball travels took me to Azusa Pacific, Citrus College, Cal state Fullerton and finally back to Azusa Pacific (Go Cougars!) where I received an undergraduate degree in History in 1973. Later on, after 7 years of night school, I received an MBA from the University of Southern California (Fight On!). After retirement, I taught part-time during the Spring semester at the USC Marshall School of Business (Food Industry Management Program) from 2014 through 2019.
I am a cancer survivor.
My wife and I enjoy our family and friends and we travel a little. I like to play golf, read, play the guitar and sail.
I want to thank all of the GHS Class of 1969 for helping to make some of my favorite (and oldest) memories. As Bobbie Lambert and Gail (Liragis) Johnson told me, "It takes a long time to grow an Old Friend".
I enjoyed seeing many of our Tartan classmates at our 50th Reunion in 2019 and at our Group 70th Birthday Bash in 2021. Remember, as Jill (Tannehill) Selak always reminds us, "The Class of '69 is still MIGHTY FINE!".
